Question Granted Student Visa for January 2011

      Hi all

I have been granted my Student Visa now and will be flying over in January 2011 to Melbourne to start my course in February........ and I can't wait!!!!!

I have a few questions if anyone can help???

      1. My course/visa is for 2yrs, I take it I am ok to book a one-way ticket as Qantas tickets are only valid for 12months??
      2. Is it better to book online or direct through a travel agent?
      2. What info do I need at the airports other than my visa details & passport?

If there's anything else you think I should know, the info would be very much appreciated.

Also I would love to get chatting to people who are doing the same thing......so if anyone is travelling to Melbourne and going to the NMIT, I will be flying out in January and my course starts in Febuary, I would love to hear from you.

      All the best

      Cheers

      Hi Julia

I have been in Oz on a student visa for nearly 2 years now. In answer to your questions
      1. yes you can just buy a one way ticket.
      2. I booked my ticket online through Singapore but I wouldn't have thought it would make any difference if you booked online or through a travel agent.
      3. No other info need at airport.

Hi, I was just wondering about studying in oz. Is it expensive and are any grants provided.

I am considering doing a phd, would there be any problems regarding applying or getting funding

      Thanks

      Hi

Yes it is expensive and probably a PHD will more expensive than the Diploma I am studying. As far as I know there is no funding available to international students. Applying for the visa is easy and only takes a few weeks.

Funding options though few but are available.
      1. IPRS http://www.innovation.gov.au/Section...olarships.aspx

As far as i know the deadline for each year closes 30th Oct, but still have a look. Its quite competitive, usually having a prior research experience or publications with a good gpa will turn the odds in your favour.

      2. University Scholarships. Each university may give you scholarship depending on how close your research topic matches their research goals or interests.

      3. Each School within the university has ARC/Other funded projects. Some of these allocate funds for PhD students as well. If you are really lucky you can join one such funded project. In such projects you don't have the flexibility to choose your own PhD Topic. The topic will already be defined and given to you. One of my friends was lucky to get into one.. You will need to look at the school page to get an idea of funded projects.

If nothing works, once you have chosen your potential supervisor(s) ask them what kind of funding can be made available through the school. If they are really keen on you, they might throw in a fee waiver + some assistantships or at-least tutorships.

      cheers.
