Renewing british passports in australia

hoping for an answer if possible. We have been in Victoria for 8 mths now and just had to renew eldests child's passport. Very easy process, although more expensive!! Passport came back in 4 weeks but what do I do about the visa? We are on a 175 PR visa and it expires in 2014. If we were to travel overseas would I need to take both passports or do I have to get new visa put in new passport?
I've asked immi, they don't know and the british consulate can't tell me either!! I live south eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Not looking to travel overseas until next year but who knows when we may need to go back to uk to visit.
Any help or advice greatfully appreciated

The British consulate are not there to advise on Austrlian visas as far as I know. Surprised immi did not have an idea though.

Anyway, I have heard of people carrying the expired passport and that seems to work, but myself, I think I would just send it off to an immigration office and ask for a new visa label.

My understanding is that a 175 would carry the same status as a RRV for travel outside Australia because it allows a holder of that visa to return to Australia as a resident,therefore I would read the
information on the IMMI website about replacement visa labels etc for RRV's as applying to 175's.
That page says:

Re-evidence of return visa labels/authorities

If a passport containing a valid RRV, ATR or RE has expired, or been lost, stolen or damaged, the visa label can be re-evidenced with another label in the holder's new passport. An application charge applies for this service.
If a valid visa is in an expired passport, it is possible to continue to use the visa until it expires, provided both the old and new passports are carried together when travelling to Australia.
Note: For applicants who do not want to carry both their old and new passports, it is recommended that they have their valid visa label re-evidenced to avoid possible delays/inconvenience when travelling. An application charge applies to the re-evidencing of RRVs, ATRs and REs.

I would also carry a copy of what proud2beaussie has written - from an official source, because the people at the passport control may not be aware of the rules.

Bonnie, I looked this up a while ago and saw you can do the visa evidencing thing again in person in CBD or Dandenong offices, the website has some details of appointment times etc. We are going to have this next year too.
