You will have a year to validate your visa from date of receipt of your meds or PCC whichever was first.

So if your meds were received on December 18th 2009say, and your visa is granted today then you have until around 17th December 2010 to validate your visa.That means that you and all migrating applicants on your visa must validate.Once you have been to OZ and validated and if you are not quite ready to make the move,you can then leave and re-visit as many times as you like but your permanent move must happen before 5 years are up (I think it is 5 years from grant and not validation but not 100% sure !).

It isn't the date of receipt either. My validation date is a year from the date of my PCC check, which is weeks earlier than the date it was received by DIAC.

The answer to the original question, is that you need to validate before whatever date DIAC tells you you must validate on the visa grant letter.

The five years is from the date of the grant letter not the validation.
