not looking good

Okay be gentle with me I'm upset!! Just had word that we probably will not get the points we need as OH does not have a degree. (he is a construction project manager).
He is a time served joiner who worked his way up and he has worked in project management for the last 7 years until he was made redundant in April '09. At that time the only job he could get was as a joiner, so he registered as self employed and worked as a joiner until October '09 when he was offered permanent employment as a site agent. He is still employed in this capacity. Does anyone know, or can anyone think of any way that we can get the required points? HELP PLEASE we really want to go!

I may be wrong, but I thought you can be assessed in your job over here????
My friends husband is a joiner who never went to college was just taught on the job, like lots of people did years ago. He went with an agency who had him filling in loads and loads of paperwork to explain his job in a lot of detail, how he does certain things etc, after all this paperwork was done he would then have someone in that would assess him on this job, along with payslips and work references to prove he has worked for the length of time he said this would have been enough???
I'm not an agent, just passing on what happened to my friend when he was trying to get his skill assessed and passed.
Give an agent a call, you never know.
Good Luck.

Hi there
Weren't you going to be the main applicant, relying on your own skills as an Office Manager? What happened about that, please?
Cheers
Gill

Hi Gill
My Husband was the main applicant, I worked in the Civil service for 14 years and changed occupation 2 years ago. I am a social care support worker for a mental health charity within their homeless services I am currently waiting to hear if my employer will allow me to undertake an SVQIII but I don't think this would even allow me to qualify as the main applicant. The irony is, we visited Australia 18 months ago on a reccie and approached some recruitment agents who told us that Ian could get a job and command a high salary if only he had a visa!!
You have given me really good advice in other posts so thank you for your help. Any advice you might have would be really appreciated. clan mac

Hi Clan Mac
You might have to live on less for a while but what if Ian goes back to joinery for a few more months. That would make the migration game come right for you, wouldn't it?
What qualifications does Hubby have as a joiner and how long did he do joinery for?
Cheers
Gill

Hi Gill
Ian has full trade papers and also advanced craft. He is 42 now, he left school at 15 and started his apprenticeship straight away. He moved into a supervisory role approx 12 years ago and from then progressed into management. So he spent 15 years as a joiner. This is an option that would be worth considering but I wonder if he would be tied to Joinery work in Australia??
Grateful thanks again Golly you're a star!

I don't know whether this is right so please research it before getting your hopes up. Butw hen we were looking at going through the skilled migrant route my husband didn't have the relevant qualifications as a Chef, he has worked as a chef for 15 years and been head chef and in various types of establishment but becasue he didn't do it through a NVQ or apprenticeship means that he didn't get the points. SO he was having to do an AQF3 to show he had the skills. Don't know whether your husband could do the same???
Good luck hope you get some positive news soon

Hi there
You would need to get Vetassess to approve Ian's skills as a joiner:
Joiner 4411-15 - Australian Skills Recognition Information
Applying for a trade occupation - VETASSESS
DIAC would need to see that Ian has worked as a joiner for a least 12 months out of the 24 months immediately preceding submission of the visa application.
The visa application need not be submitted till the day before Ian's 45th birthday. The day after the visa application goes in, Ian goes back to work as a site manager.
It sounds to me as if some agents/ciients are getting into a muddle with this whole thing. It is NOT the big deal that people imagine.
Cheers
Gill
PS - No, he would not be tied to joinery work out in Oz.

Thanks Gill,
I think you make a good point about some agents getting their knickers in a twist! As we are only just beginning this process, it is so confusing to be told one thing by one agent and then another completely different thing by another agent. This forum is the greatest! I feel as if I we have a glimmer of hope now. Cheers Gill x

I totally agree with Gill for what it's worth. I don't understand at all what the issue is-apart from the recent 12 month work requirement in the skilled area. You will just need to work through the tedious skills assessment process which will take time. But the sooner you start all that the better with the slow processing times currently in place.
