previous visa number needed for migration visa

hi,

can anyone help please,

My mum has just filled out her application for a contributory parent visa (sub class 143) and we have come unstuck regarding previous visits and visa numbers.

My mum has been to Australia now four times over the last twenty years, the last three trips we used electronic visas and therefore we have no visa numbers or visa stamps.

She has the entry and exit stamps in her passport, but thats all. Also, she has not kept the visa for the first visit from 20 years ago.

We have emailed australia house via the dimia web site, but so far no response...

Has anyone been in this situation and is able to advise us what we should do please.

Thank you

Caroline x

Yes I was in same position and phoned London for advice. They said just to put the dates down (even rough dates if not sure) and highlight that your mum travelled on ETA - they will do the rest as they have access to the system. My application didn't come back so I guess it's ok!. I think they are more interested if you have travelled on long term visas before.

Regards

Hi Caroline

My mother has a Contributory Parent Visa which was granted just shy of two years ago now. Like you, we did it ourselves without the help of an Agent, so if you want a hand with any of it, please just give me a shout.

I was in exactly the same boat as you with Mum's tourist visas. When I looked at her current and previous passports, there were loads of date stamps for Oz and for several other places as well. I battled with it for an hour but gave up.

In the end, I took complete photocopies of Mum's current and previous passports and had them both certified as true copies. On the form, I put "Passports enclosed." In Q 57 orwhatever it is - the one at the end of the form where you can put additional info, I said we couldn't work out the exact dates, visa numbers etc but that cert copies of the passports were enclosed.

The truth is that DIAC can search their database and get all this info for themselves in 5 minutes flat anyway so it is NOT worth spending a lot of time on it. The CO didn't even ask about Mum's earlier visits.

If you need to know something, don't waste time trying to ask DIAC in London. Instead, send an e-mail to parents@immi.gov.au That goes straight to the POPC (Perth Offshore Parents Centre) who know more than anybody else does about CPVs. They are incredibly helpful and will reply within 24-72 hours. They are also very helpful if you need to phone them for anything:

Contact us - Department of Immigration and Citizenship

They are not at all stuffy and they are not keen on the enquiry form. They prefer it if you e-mail them as above.

Here's a tip: The application checklist says nothing about Form 80:

http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/80.pdf

The POPC used to leave it to the COs to request Form 80, months after the application has been made.

However a friend's parents have just submitted their own CPV 143 application. They were so thrilled when their daughter in Oz sent them a copy of the acknowledgement letter, which the POPC had sent to her, that the Parents sent a copy of it to me!

The acknowledgement letter is dated 11th August 2008 so it is very recent. It says that the application was lodged on 1st July 2008. It gives the link to Form 80 and asks that the applicants should complete Form 80 and send it to the POPC "at your earliest opportunity."

They are working out ways of streamlining the process and minimising delays with it. Somebody has to write and send the acknowledgement letter. It does make perfect sense for him to ask for Form 80 at the same time.

Therefore my advice is to get your Mum to complete it now and just enclose it with the main bundle of documents, so save her another task in a few weels' time.

Important Tip: The 2nd Instalment for the CPV ws not increased on 1st July 2008, which it normally would be. It was delayed this year because of the increase in the quota of CPVs. The POPC have now confirmed that the 2nd Instalment will be increased with effect from 1st October 2008. The POPC say that the increase is "significant" but they can't give the new amount yet because it has not yet been officially announced. However they are advising everyone who is currently preparing a CPV application to make every effort to make sure that it reaches the POPC "Well before the end of September" so that the families can make every effort to ensure that they can avoid having to pay the increased fees.

The other thing they mentioned in the application that I saw is that currently it is taking about 12 months from the official lodgement date before a CO gets in touch to start the final processing.

Best wishes

Gill

Extra Thoughts

Hi again, Caroline

What are your Mum's circumstances, please? By which I mean would she be in a position to move to Oz fairly promptly after she makes her CPV application?

More and more parents are doing this now because of the lengthy processing time for CPVs. (Currently about 18 months but could well increase.)

In order to ease the situation, DIAC have become especially helpful about long-stay tourist visas for CPV applicants who want to move to Oz without waiting for their CPVs to be granted.

If she can spare the time, Mum would be able to get a long-stay tourist visa for Oz:

Tourist Visa (Subclass 676)

If she says she has made a CPV application and would like a 12 month stay in Oz, they will give her a stay of 12 months. If that is not long enough, current Policy is to make it possible for her to go to the nearest DIAC office to get a new one when the first one is about to expire.

The meds for her CPV could be done in Oz and it is significantly cheaper to get them done there than here:

HSA Group

If she is British, Mum would not need private medical insurance for Oz as a condition of her tourist visa, regardless of her age, unless she wants to get it. The reason is because she would be covered by the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement between the UK and Oz, which counts as medical insurance for the purposes of the tourist visa:

Visitors to Australia - Medicare Australia

If Mum would be 70 or over by the time a long stay tourist visa would be granted (but they only take a week or two even on paper) then she would need to get her own GP to complete a simple form of Medical Certificate, which is here:

dima_health - Australian High Commission

Best wishes

Hi Gill and Liz, thank you so much for responsding... (Gill, I know you from pip, youve spoken to me and my sister in the past... thanks x).

My mum is looking to make the final move in about two years, (im off to perth in roughly june 09) and with both myself and my sister being there it is only natural that y mum wants to come over.

I didnt think we would have an issue over her visa application until we got to the request for visa numbers. Thanks to your two posts hopefully this will not be a problem.

Gill, I just want to say your posts both here and on pip are so helpful and have really given us a helping hand...THANK YOU XXX

I will definitly be contacting you again regarding this whether it goes well or not, hopefully the former!!

Best wishes

Gill's right about not phoning London - I only did it because I was desperate to complete form but at £1 a minute I would only phone them as a last resort - i.e., if Gill's not about!!
Hope you get everything off in time and good luck.

Liz

Gill

That's a new one asking for the form 80. I'm off work next week - that'll give me something to do. lol!

Hi Liz

Hmmmm. It must be a very recent change indeed, to judge from your own timeline.

My guess is that next time they revise the checklists for CPV applications they will probably include Form 80 as one of the documents they want people to send with the initial application.

It definitely makes sense to do it up front or close to.

With Mum, the DIAC website says coyly, "You may be asked for Character info" etc.

I thought, "Mum is 85. They seem to use some discretion about whether they want this thing or not. Surely they won't want it from such an old dear."

So I glanced through the form and decided to leave it. 7.5 months later or so, Mum's CO contacted my sister. She wanted Form 80 completed and sent a copy of it by e-mail.

It is such a total pain to have to do Form 80 months after you think you have completed all the form filling that I now reckon it is far better to get it out of the way at the beginning.

Quite a few of the questions on Form 47PA are repeated on Form 80, so it is essential to have a copy of the completed Form 47PA beside you when you tackle Form 80, so as to ensure that the repeated answers tally with each other.

I wish you the joy of it, Liz. It is the worst document of the lot.

Best wishes

Gill

If I remember rightly you actually advised me about Form 80 but I was so anxious to get application in before a possible increase I didn't complete it as it wasn't essential. Also I had taken one look at it and went aaarrrggghhh.
Can't put off the inevitable - can't wait for my hols next week so I can complete Form 80!!!
Of course you know what that means Gill - expect some emails next week when I get stuck on the questions!! You're not going on holiday next week are you?

Take Care
Liz

Just thought I would add, from the horses mouth so to speak...........

Dates of Previous Travel to Australia
If you no longer have previous passports or if you travelled on an ETA and do not know the relevant details, you may provide the approximate dates of visits to the best of your knowledge where requested on the application form. Your case officer can check your records.

Please note:
- The advice you are given by the London Contact Centre will be based on the information you supply.
- We cannot advise clients on the likely outcome of any visa application, as applications are assessed on an individual merits basis.
- The Department of Immigration & Citizenship strongly recommends that clients do not make any irreversible travel bookings until they have been granted an appropriate visa.

We hope this information has been of assistance.

Yours faithfully
