Medical Questions
I was wondering what reasons there are for failing the medical?
Im really worried as Ive had gastric by-pass surgery. Im still overweight as my surgery wasnt that long ago, does anyone know if there is a BMI limit? Mine is approx 36, will i fail my medical? Also what about people who have been treated for depression, is that a big no-no too?
Also, Im not sure where to post this question so i will just tag it on here.
Is gastric bypass surgery carried out in Oz? Im worried that should I have any complications whilst in Oz that they wont know anything about my operation and therefore wont know how to treat me? Also, I know that we should get copies of our doctors records but in my case, would it be best to get copies of my hospital file too? (Im not even sure i will be able to get this, but i thought it best to ask)
I don't think there is an actual official BMI limit, think there are rumours of the max being 35 but think is just scare tactics?! The general thing is that they will be looking to make sure that you have got no medical issues (breathing, chest issues etc) that could be caused by being overweight.
i have my medicals tomorrow and worried about things too. i have a bmi of 34 but i exercise daily and have been on slimming world for a year now. i am trying so hard to get back to my pre pregnancy weight but i put on 5 stone with my first son - he is 11 in a few wks!! still trying to lose after all these years.

Thanks so much for the info. Hopefully everything should be ok then as my BMI is dropping every week and i have no other medical issues.
i am over weight when i had my medical i was border line with bmi but because i was flexible and other wise fit doc wrote this in and passed ok they are really only interested if your lungs are clear and not going to be a drain on there health system...............
as for depression i suffer from this been on tablets for yrs but have been off them a couple of years but still have episodes which i told him this and was fine as they do ask if mental health problems and a bit of history but again i was fine and passed
so in other words dont get worrying to much
good luck
julie

Hi, please don't worry as long as you are fit and healthy and they can see that you are making steps to reduce the weight you should be fine. They are just concerned if you have any underlying health issues because of the weight, ie diabetes, blood pressure, heart.
Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.
Ps I forgot to mention that yes gastric band surgery is common over here!!!
i had my medicals today and i must say i don't know what i was worried about. apart from the fact the gp bruised me when taking blood everything else was great ( i always knew doctors weren't as good as nurses at taking blood!!)
i got a summary of my medical history printed off from my surgery and so all my info was there in black and white and he only asked me a few questions. i did blame the excess weight on the kids though and he laughed - more over his dog was called Bonnie!!!
just waiting for the results and then sent off to oz. his final remark was 'jope you have a great new life in australia' - i take that as a positive remark.
Bonnie

Hi all, This is a first time post although i have been browsing the forum for a while now and found it extremely helpful and full of information.
Everything has been running reasonably smooth (apart from the time it is taking) just sent my TRA evidence away last week so fingers crossed.
But what has started worrying me is the medical, i saw the earlier post mentioning blood pressure, i have had slightly high blood pressure for a few years not serious enough for any medication but it is still high, i am a reasonably fit and active guy so the blood pressure might just be genetic, could this be something to worry about with regards to passing the medical or being refused my visa?
