Question Apprenticeship in Oz?

Hello all.

First post here so i'll start by saying this be a cool lil forum you got here.

Now to the heart of the matter :P. I live in the UK and i'm getting pretty bored of it tbh. I was wondering how I would go about getting an apprenticeship in Oz. My main area is I.T and would prefereably like to go into this area as I have a BTEC in Software Development. I heard that apprenticeships are easier to find in Oz and that thier schemes are better, its niegh impossible to find one here in Manchester :( .

Anyway what sort of Visa would I require? I'm guessing to work and live, but i dont know how they work out if your allowed one or not.

Sorry for the Ramble people, but i had no clue of where to ask these questions and then i stumbled upon this Forum and it seeems the more likley place to get some answers :).

Oh and i dunno if this is the correct place to put this post in so move it if it aint in the right place :P

Cheers. Mark

Hello Mark

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

Mmmmmmm. I'm not the right person to try to help you, my friend. I am not a migration agent and my knowledge of the I.T. industry is absolutely zero. I don't kow what a BTEC is either. Is it a degree or is it a diploma of some sort?

How old are you, please? I've a suspicion that your best best might be a Working Holday Maker Visa if you are under 30? Please see here:

Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)

There is also a visa called an Occupational Trainee Visa, about which I know zilch apart from what I've just read:

Occupational Trainee Visa (Subclass 442)

You might well not qualify for this thing anyway. I guess that a third possibility might be to seek employer-sponsorship, but do be aware that the rules for the 457 visa specifically say that it is NOT available for the purposes of an appenticeship:

Temporary Business (Long Stay) - Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457)

I wiykd suggest tat your best bet might be to pay Peter Chiam a very modest fee for having a chat with you and discussing the possibiliies. Peter trades as ptlabs and he is an IT wizard as well as a Registered Migration Agent. Because he is in Sydney, Peter probably also has a very solid understanding firstly of your own training needs, secondly of what is available in IT in Oz, and thirdly whether there is a visa that could be made to fit the bill.

Peter's website is here:

Ptlabs Consulting

Peter would undoubtedly be able to cut through your situation - and wishes - like a hot knife through butter and come up with the best suggestions for your situation, plus he would be able to guide you bout the dos and don'ts of preserving a possible pathway to emigration to Oz for you, in case you should turn out to want that once you ahve spent some time there.

This is the best I can do, I am afraid. I really don't want to risk dabbling in your question because my instinct is that you need proper help with it, which I do not know enugh to be able to provide.

Best wishes

Gill

sorry no it is not a degree.

It is my understanding that there are different levels BTEC qualifications.

by taking extra units you can progres in steps to BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND)

I found this information on the Internet.

BTEC Qualifications

The BTEC National Award
The 6-unit National Award is a unit-based specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the vocational sector. As such the award offers a qualification which can extend study and provide vocational emphasis for learners following an Applied GCE or GCE route. It is broadly equivalent to one GCE A level and is graded pass, merit or distinction (P, M, D).

The BTEC National Certificate
The 12-unit National Certificate provides a specialist work-related qualification that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the vocational sector and also offer different emphasis through the choice of specialist units. It is broadly equivalent to two GCE A levels. It is given a double grade, for example, PP, MP, DD.

The BTEC National Diploma
The 18-unit National Diploma extends and deepens the specialist focus available in the 12-unit Certificate. The qualification prepares learners for employment in the sector. It is broadly equivalent to three GCE A levels and is triple graded, for example, PPP, MMP, DDD.
