Cool

Hi Wendy,
We Have Been Over In Melbourne Now 6 Months ,with My Wife On A Student Visa And Me As Her Spouse.
I Am Only Allowed To Work 20 Hours A Week For The Duration Of Her Course, which We Thought Or Didnt Think Would Be A Problem, well It Is.
With Rising Rental Costs And Food Costs Soaring ,plus Because We Are Non Resident I Pay A Higher Tax Which Is A Nightmare.
Wether We Can Last Out The Course Because Of The Finance Problems We Will Just Have To See

student visa

Hi

We are going with enough money to support ourselves throughout the two years so the money we earn from working twenty hours a week will be spending money!!

But thanks to all who are concerned!

Good luck to anyone who has gone in on a student visa or any other way for that matter!!!

Wendy

Check whether you are being correctly taxed as a non resident - if you are living in Australia I can see a case for contending that you are tax resident in Australia.

You can be tax resident as the holder of a long term temporary residency visa ...

Best regards.

It's likely they will be a resident under ordinary concepts on the basis they are living and working in the same place.

This is on the basis they intended to come for > 6 months... Student visas are not in themselves a determining non-res factor.

Hi Wendy.

Congratulations! I am pleased that you have what you want.

I am also very impressed by the speed with which your meds have been approved. The e-meds system must be very good indeed.

Cheers

Gill

Hello Martin

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

I am so sorry to hear of your difficulties. Is there any chance of an employer-sponsored 457 visa for you? That would enable you to work full time.

Please shout if we can help in any way.

Best wishes

Gill
