Im sorry i dont know how to answer your question, but just to say i feel for you. I too am in a similar situation.
I have an elderley dog who has diabetes and cushings disease. I am afraid we will have to have her put to sleep as the chances of finding a home are virtually nil! There is no way she would be fit to fly or go in quarantine. It will break my heart.
What type of dog is it? and how old?
Bex

We know how you feel with regard leaving the dog, we have 3 big brutes and would like to take them all (cost is astronomical) but with the Oz law regarding no more than two per household until you apeal we can't take the risk of getting all 3 over there and then loseing one of them.
As far as the age of your dog, we have friends who took their dog over to Oz who was almost 10, he had no problems at all and loves the environment over there.
Paul.
He is a black labrador,we had him 6 years ago from a couple who were splitting up or he would have had to go to the dogs home im guessing he must be about 13,hes no trouble and sleeps allday and is super loyal to my nearly 6 year old daughter Sofie,we have two other dogs as well(re homes) but i never really 'bonded, with them like i did with T.C,one is a massive white german shepherd quite young and the other a small doberman cross,im sure they will have no probs finding new homes as there both lovely looking young dogs, but i dont know about T.C,i know deepdown the chances of taking him are slim at best and we would be taking him for selfish reasons its heartbreaking tho, thanks for all your posts,

We were in this dilemma with our old dog but we HAD to have him put down on Mothers Day (we had no choice)!!!!! With what we have gone through if there is a slight chance your dog can go TAKE IT!
My heart goes out to you it will be one of the hardest things you do!
been thinking about it allday and still dont know what to do,theres no one i could leave him with as my familys really small and hubbys wouldnt have him.
The last thing i want to do is put him in the dogs home as he deserves to live out his days in comfort, cant believe im saying all this im a real hard cow where the pets are concerned normally!!aaagh!
Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that we brought our golden retriever with us, he was 11 and to be honest a little bit wobbley on his legs, but we decided that he was part of our family and there was no way we could leave him....What a fantastic decision that turned out to be..Toby is 12 this June, he bounces about everywhere, no more aches and pains, swims in the sea everynight, plays chase (something he'd stopped doing in the uk) hes amazing hes like a puppy again!!!!
Oh and he was fine on the flight and in quarantine, we was advised not to be tempted to go and visit him and i'm so glad we listened as i've heard of a few dogs getting over excited at seeing there owners then having heart attacks when they've been left again!!!! Not sure how true this was, but when Toby seen us when we went to pick him up he nearly took off his tail was wagging that much!!! Our Vet in the uk also advised against us visiting him.
Why don't you take him to the vet for a full check to see what state he's in? If he has a serious health problem, the stress of the move might be hard for him. If he's pretty much OK then he should have a happy few years with you in Oz and maybe an extended life.
We have the same dilemma with our elderly cats, which our children adopted as kittens from the SPCA 11 years ago. From here there's no quarantine though! There will be a mutiny if I say we can't take them and they seem fairly sprightly, but I will get them vet checked nearer the time, as I'd hate to take them over to have them drop dead.
No matter how much you love them, the expense is a consideration.
