Social Work Skills Assessment.

Hello to everyone!

This is our first posting (its taken us all evening to work out how to post this!)

We just wanted to know how long it took other social workers and welfare workers to get their skills assessments processed by the AASW and the AIWCW. We are under a bit of a tight timescale because we need to lodge our visa application before June (my hubbies birthday because then we would lose 5 points and not meet the 120 points).

We applied to both AASW and AIWCW just in case. Applications were received on 18th Feb 2008. AASW have taken their fee from our bank but not acknowledged receipt or assigned a worker. AIWCW have acknowledged receipt but not taken their fee!

Gollywobbler will become famous soon enough
Hello the WRs

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

I don't know the answer to your question. I am simply bumping your post back up to the top in the hope that someone else will be able to help.

Have you considered ringing up both of the skills assessment bodies to see what they say about timescales and also pleading your cause? Might be worth a couple of phone calls, I suspect.

Best wishes

Gill

Thanks for that Gill AKA Gollywobbler. We've got our agent chasing up the applications but we still remain anxious that we might not meet the deadline and never go!

Child Protection Social Work Victoria

Hi there

I am a CP social worker from Leeds looking to move to Victoria. Just wondered if you had heard yet from the AASW and if your assessment was positive. I only have the Dip SW and not the degree and wondered if you two were in a similar position and if so how how the AASW viewed this, taking into account work experience.

I think I must be a complete novice in email language.. I can’t figure out what IELTS means as you mention in your previous thread?

In another social workers thead she mentions LAFHA .. any idea what that means?

This is all very exciting for you. I hope everything goes well.

I also hope, really hope, my husband and I are not far behind you!!

Best wishes,

Liz Gorman

Hello Yorkshirefolk!

It took the AASW two months to get back to us with a positive assessment on husbands qualification. We included a letter asking them to prioritize our assessment because of my husbands birth date and they did. Had a very patient(!), friendly and helpful lady called Jaipura assessing it. Bombarded her with emails as well as phoning her for updates. Really approachable.

Tom is the main applicant on our visa. Not able to use my skills for extra points because I have had maternity leave and am working part-time so do not meet the specific work experience requirement for visa. However, I am in the process of gathering info to have my DipSW assessed by AASW so that I can work when I get out there.

Tom has the DipSW aswell as the MA in Social work but he has a non-relevant first degree. He has ten years social work experience.
Try this link to the AASW website. Its the Country Assessment guidelines that should give you a guide to what they expect from qualifications and experience. Must warn you, it confused us totally!

AASW - Country Assessment Guidelines - UK

I will keep you posted as to how I get on. I have a relevant first degree, the DipSW, no Masters and ten years experience.

The AASW will pass your application on to the AIWCW for free if they can't give you a positive. AIWCW give same 60 points as AASW.

We had all sorts of trouble with the AIWCW not recognizing Tom's DipSW but we think thats because we had an inexperienced assessor. We would have pursued this with them but we got the positive from the AASW so asked for our money back instead! We know many social workers who have received a positive from the AIWCW with no problems at all.

The IELTS is the International English Language test. You get 15 points for holding a british passport and another 10 points for passing the ielts. We needed the extra 10 points for our 175 visa.

Not sure what the LAFHA is....

We are hoping to go to Melbourne so if thats the area you are looking at, we could end up being colleagues!

Good luck and best wishes to you. Keep us posted as to how you get on

Julie

Hi guys,

Have been reading your posts with interest.

Julie - If you don't need to do the skills assessment for your visa you may find that if you bring all your paperwork over with you and then do it whilst you are here as PR it is cheaper to do the assessment. May be an option.

Also, most jobs in the field specify a social work qualification (or equivalent), but not all will ask that you are registered with the AASW or AIWCW. You can work here without having your qualification assessed. I have over 8 years experience in the social welfare field but no specific social work qual (i have a MSc in health ed and health promotion) and out of 3 job applied for I was offered 3 interviews. Didn't attend 1 interview and had 2 job offers from the others. Start work next week

I was concerend before we came that my lack of specific qualifications would be a hindrance, but has not proved to be so, although I have a lot of experience in housing support, case management, family support and social housing which seems to have helped. They are really keen on case management experience here, so if you have that you should be fine without an assessment and registration, unless you want to work in statutory fields like CP.

I am considering doing the 2 year (4 yr part-time distance learning) top up for a social workers degree here next year or two to allow for flexibility and move into different areas of work, but will make my decision after I start work, so we shall see!

Unfortunately social work is not paid that well here (well, we are in Victoria, so can't comment on other states), but most organisations appear to be family friendly with part-time hours and some offer salary packaging schemes which increases your take home pay. Also, welfare workers get paid less than social workers under the award so even if you have a positive skills assessment under the AIWCW you may want to press your skills as a social worker for any jobs to increase the salary scale offered!

Good luck!

Sarah

Oh, LAFHA means living away from home allowance. Some people in Oz on 457 visa can claim this. No idea how it works but is specific for people here on temporary visas.

Hello Peppapig,

Great advice there. Thanks a lot as you have lessoned a lot of my anxieties about finding work in Oz. Had visions of being isolated at home...watching really bad tv...busying myself trying to make the house spider proof etc etc...

I hope you don't mind but can I ask you some questions....

What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 social work there? In terms of social work experience, responsibilities at work and pay? A lot of jobs seem to advertise these different levels. We are preparing ourselves for a cut in wage when we move (I've reached the top of my scale and I can't go up unless I go into management...would rather not!! He's in management but is expecting to have to start again as a field worker) so it is interesting that you mention salary packaging schemes. What do they include? Am I hoping too much that they include a car hire scheme....laptops.....

We are also quite looking forward to finding out about the "Active social clubs" that organisations seem to tag onto the end of their job adverts! What are they???!!!

Best wishes to you in your new job!

Julie

Hi Julie,

no probs, happy to help if I can!

Have pasted some definitions of the different social work grades here. Am a little unsure myself of how it all works. My new job had been offered on class 2, year 1 due to my case management experience and also because I had managed a support service in my last post. A lot of jobs that are case management based tend to be class 2. I would see class 3 as management or senior positions.

13.2.2(a) Class I means and includes all qualified persons who are appointed to work under the direction and supervision of more experienced social workers.

13.2.2(b) Class II means and includes all qualified persons who are appointed to work as such, who are not working under direct supervision and who have some administrative responsibility, including:

• Social worker in charge of an agency or department with a staff of up to three social workers or with a staff of social workers plus other employees totalling at least six in number; or

• The only social worker employed; or

• Social worker responsible to senior social worker for a major activity or group of activities within an agency or department; or

• Social worker appointed as assistant to a social worker in Class II; or

• Case work supervisor.

13.2.2(c) Class III means and includes all qualified persons who are appointed as such to positions including:

13.2.2(c)(i) Social worker in charge of an agency or department with a staff of more than three and up to seven social workers, or with a staff of more than three social workers plus other employees totalling at least thirteen in number; or

13.2.2(c)(ii) Senior social worker specifically appointed as follows:

• in charge of a designated training unit for social work students; or

• assistant to Class IV; or

13.2.2(c)(iii) Any social worker in any position which requires special skill and experience and where the responsibilities are mutually agreed by employer and employee to be equal to those of a social worker appointed under 13.2.2(c)(i) hereof.

13.2.2(d) Class IV means and includes all qualified persons appointed as such who have senior administrative responsibility, including:

13.2.2(d)(i) Social worker in charge of an agency or department with a staff of eight or more social workers, or with a staff of social workers plus other employees totalling at least fourteen in number; or

I don't see why your OH should go back to field work if he has had a lot of management experience. I would say he should be looking for jobs that match his experience, I would doubt it would be a problem.

The only issue I had raised at the 2 interviews I went to was that I would be starting again building professional networks, which of course can be tough, and lack of local knowledge or services, resources etc. This was discussed at length at the interviews. It ultimately didn't affect their decision, but I had to emphasise my ability to find these things out and had done some research before hand etc to discuss with them. The internet is a great resource, which I pointed out! One way around this of course would be to do some agency work, which I considered, as one way to get to know my way around. Spoke toa helpful agency in Melbourne.

Don't know if you have found it yet, but Infoxchange Australia - Technology for Social Justice is a good site, especially for jobs.

Salary packaging schemes are a way of directing some of your income before it is taxed towards a specific item like childcare, rent, mortgage, loan etc. We put OH's onto a visa card which we can then spend anywhere we like. You can also put it towards household expenses etc and I think there is some allowance for a laptop, every time you speak to them they go on about laptops! Don't understand the finer points of it all, find tax far too complicated! but you are definately better off. I have been really fortunate as my post offers salary packaging even for part-time staff , where you still get the full allowance, so will actually pay very little tax. Can't help with the social clubs though!

Where are you thinking of heading?

Thanks for all that information Sarah. Really appreciated. In relation to the job front, I guess we should be aiming higher than we think we should be! I work in Stat CP, and Tom works for the NHS managing a large team of mental health workers. Its also good to learn that the employers are family friendly. I will have to remain part time until my youngest starts school over there.

We are heading to Melbourne and surrounding areas. Have never been before, but from research it seems the best "fit" in terms of what we are looking for. We lodged last week so are hoping to do a recce/validate visa at the beginning of next year.

I'm guessing you are in Melbourne? How are you finding it? How did you settle? How long have you been there? All the questions!!! Just tell me to stop. Its a nosy habit!!!

Julie
