Hello Anne
Welcome to Poms in Oz.
I will ask Caz Beckham to reply to you because she is a mother in the same position as you.
Also, please see this thread on British Expats. Join BE as well and join in, I suggest, because several of the Parents who contribute to that thread have left children behind in the UK.

My mother is one of them (I'm in the UK, my sister Elaine lives in Perth.) However, Mum is 87 and won't go near a computer! I know that Mum felt very torn. However, the Aussie option was and remains the best one for her so I pushed her into it. She tried to quibble but irt was necessary just to override her and get on with it in view of her age.
Once she got to Oz, it was a bit of a mixed bag for 8 months or so. She seemed very unsettled and I was quite worried, wondering whether I had done the wrong thing in pushing her as hard as I did. However, it was also the case that the doctor in Oz decided to give her a complete MOT - which revealed that Mum had become very anaemic. He put her on a course of iron injections which sorted that out.
15 months on Mum sounds as bright as a button again, so I am not sure how big a part the anaemia played in making her feel as down as she seemed. The (many) nurses who post on this site would know, I expect. However, she is absolutely fine again now so whatever it was it was transient.
I would say, "Go for it, my dear. Please do it. Give yourself the option to choose. It is not rocket-science to arrange matters so that the Parent will be a free agent in both countries. The best thing for all 3 of your children
- by miles - is to know that you have that choice."
Obviously I speak as the child left behind, but I reckon I speak for your son as well, honey.
Best wishes
Gill
