How long to go from temp visa to perm?

Hi all, excellent site this, I have learnt loads already!!

We have been through the skills assessment and dont have enough points, so we are going to try for sponsorship. This will mean going to Oz on a 457 visa.

How long will it take before I can get a permanent one? I have seen that 2 years is a min. but others say you can apply before that.

Will I be able to apply for a perm one whilst I am doing the same job?

Depends - how many points short are you ? after 12 months working in Australia you will score a further 10 points which may take you to the pass-mark. Maybe you can secure State sponsorship with the job offer now - these 2 options depend on your being able to get your skills recognised in your skilled occupation. If you can not get skills recognition then 2 years on the 457 can lead to employer sponsored permanent visa under ENS or RSMS
