Hi
No Im the wife kate. my husband Simon is the mech and its his brother gary who the other mech.its gary that is doing the practical first as he is better under pressure than Simon and we felt if one of us did it first the other wouldnt be doing the practical blind as such.
We are heading hopefully to adelaide or brisbane but me and the hubby want Adelaide so lets hope the gary and co agree!
It is such a long process with the new vetassess.
we started in September and its only just now things are moving along.
We are trying to find out mechanics wages at the moment we belive it is around £16000 per year which is a big drop compared to what they earn here.
Simon works in Mercedes and Gary for Mazda which is why we thinking adelaide as it is the cheapest place to live in Oz.
Keep in touch and if you here anymore about the practical let me know.
Ps which agent are you using we are with the vis bureau .

Hi to you both, I have just read your threads with interest as you are both the first Mechanic's I've seen on here! My OH is a mechanic who's worked for Mercedes and BMW in the past and had his own business in London for many years. Do you know any details about the skills test? Where is it held..one of you said in London. How do you contact them? I have no idea where to start! Thanks, Caroline.

Hi if you type vetassess into the google toolbar you should find the website.
if you have a goood look on it you will see details of the criteria you have to meet in order to do the practical test.
the first part is a written assessment where in you send references from your employers for the past 6 yrs any suppporting evidence etc.
from this you either pass or fail .pass and you go onto the practical test fail and god knows!!
we have only just found out that my brother in law passed but he has sent of stuff to vetassess and they are sending details out to him.
havent a clue where in London it is yet and as we are from merseyside must say not looking forward to travelling up there.
The practicals are held every 2 months the next one bieng april and there is a cut off to the written appllication to whether you qualify for that practical date.
we just missed it and will have to do the june practicals
Hope this helps

Hi Kate,

We are new to this site, and trying ot get all info we can, my OH is a plumber and looking to start the visa process, knowing where to start is a nightmare, all very daunting. There seems to be several locations depending on what skill pracitcal test you take, we have been told, Accrington (plumbers), Birmingham, London, Glasgow!! Good luck to you, keep in touch if you can, would love to hear how things go.
Jacky
