Hi everybody,

could anybody give me advice on the following questions in regards to banks

1. What bank do you recommend? Originally i will be moving to Victoria but due to my job i will be moving all over Oz so i would like a well known bank. Can i open an account in the UK for that bank?

2. Does that bank offer Mortgages and if so are they the mortgage where its combined with your current account.

Just don't know where to start. I would rather open an account with a bank and stick with that rather than swapping or getting a mortgage else where. I like to keep it all nice and simple!

Hi,

We opened an account with Westpac on line before we arrived and activated it when we got here. All very simple and no problems whatsoever. We also have our mortgage with westpac.

We're with Westpac too now, no problems. I originally opened an account with Commonwealth from the UK, and found them good, BUT they do not have visa debit cards, only eftpos, which is not accepted online, hence our changing accounts. If you do shop online, check first what kind of card your bank issues. Westpac has a mastercard debit, so same thing really.
No mortgage myself yet, but there are mortgage brokers here such as Mortgage Choice, Aussie etc, and they will find you the best deal, which may not be with your bank though.
