Nurses/midwives skills assessment and registration. Please help

Nurses and midwives please help me to get the paper work right. I am a nurse and midwife planning to move to Perth. I am just gathering all my paper work for my skills assessment with the ANMC.
1) I have requested verification from the NMC to be sent to ANMC and NMBWA. is this correct?
2) I am not planning to come to Oz till Jan 2009 so am I right in thinking that it is not necessary to register with NMBWA till nearer that time.
3)Do I need to send all my certificates for nursing AND midwifery if I am coming to Oz as a midwife and do I send them all to both agencies?

Sorry this is so complex but I want to get it right. If you have the answers please feel free to give me step by step instructions...I won't be offended

Thanks

Judith

nursing!

Hi Judith. I am a nurse just started in Janurary in Melbourne. So I have been through everything. You have to send your skilled stuff to everyone!! The ANMC, NBV, andthe agency that you have worked for. The process takes months and months. I don't think I would do the same thing again. It is quite complex. The agencies do not seem to talk to eachother at all so you are continually repeating eveything. Best to sort out in stages. I need you know whether it is a sponsored visa or a premanant one? thanks karen

Hi Im nurse and midwife and it took me 7 months to get my registration with NMB, this was because the school of nursing where I did my nurse training had closed down and so could not provide the information about my training that was required. I am now eligible for registation but must attend the boards office within a year for them to establish my identiy pior to actual registration.
However I now want to work in Perth so I will then have to register in Western Australia which i understand is easier than initial registration. Have you any idea what hospital to work in and are you hoping to work as a midwife or nurse.
I agree the NMB handbook provides all the info you need but just needs reading over and over again so that you dont miss anything. If I can help any please dont hesitate to e-mail me. Best Wishes
Jill

Hi Jill.

Thanks for your reply. I am applying for a job as a midwife in Perth at Joondalup if all goes to plan. Do I need to send transcripts for both nursing and midwifery courses. I have them from Midwifery but not my nursing courses. What NMC are you referring to?

There is so much to do, I hope it will all be worth it. Do you work as Midwife or nurse now?

Judith

Hi Karen,

Which bit wouldn't you do again? The whole move?
I am hoping to come out on a skilled independant 175 visa if all goes to plan. The paper work is such a dilemma.

Hi
To register you have to register as a nurse and as a midwife even if you are going to work as a midwife. The NMB is the Nurses and Midwives Board in Australia. My application was to work in New South Wales and I had been offered a job but was unable to take it at that time. However I am hoping to go to Perth around September 08 but not sure where to look for a job. I am not emigating but hoping to go on a sponsered 457 visa for a year. I had to have transcripts for nursing and midwifery although as i said couldnt get the nursing transcript.
Try not to worry just work methodically through all the paper work, the employment agency checked my application before i sent it to the nursing board and gave me some pointers to help.
The ball ache is getting all the certified documents, if you are in a union the solicitors attached to it will usually certify your documents free, If you are in RCM Thompsons are their solicitors.
It is quite stressful getting the documents sorted and I am going to Sydney in May to register in person so that I do not have to do it all again as you only have a year to register from when they say you are eligible.
At present I work on the labour ward at Jessop in Sheffield, three of my work mates have just come back from working as midwives in Sydney for a year and they said it was the best year of their lives.
If you work for the NHS you can have career breaks without resigning which is good. Even two people who have emigated have put in a career break so that if it dosnt work out in Oz they keep their jobs in UK I think they can have five years off.
Whats Joondalup like and have you looked into what jobs might be available

Love Jill

Jill,

I am applying to Joondalup health campus which is part of Ramsay Health care group. They have a few hospitals in and around WA but I particularly like this one when I went and had a look in December. The way they work is a bit different to what we are used to as Obs and gynae are combined on one unit. I am happy with this as it keeps my nursing quals and skills up to date.

Once registered over in Oz do I have to continue paying the NMC too?

How did you sort out the issue with the transcripts. I have emailed the University of Southampton and Woolwich to ask if they can help but I have a feeling they won't be able to. There must be loads of nurses/ midwives in this position since everything closed and became uni based.

I have found a solicitor locally who will just charge me £5 for the certifying of doc so long as there is not 40 or so. I assured her that there wasn't however the pile seems to be growing!!

I am planning to go out on a skilled migrant visa as I don't really want to have to work full time if I don't have to. (lazy eh) I am going for quality of life so don't want to end up working more than I have to. Are you going alone or as a family?

judith

Hi Not sure about continuing to pay to NMC suppose it depends on if you are coming back.
I found the NMC really helpful and because Rotherham School of Nursing had closed it was them who provided transcript for midwifery, it has to go directly from Uni to Australian Board like your verification of being on the register. Did you train at a uni, if so write to them with all the details and they should forward your transcripts to Oz, think they may be a cost.
My friends worked at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and they said that our women here get better care in their opinion, still busy but they felt less stressed.
Is Ramsey Health Care private care and our different do you think it might be, what advantages do you think this might have against a state hospital?
As for who is going with me, kids all grown and left home, husband dosn't want to leave is job and has no interest in going to Australia to work, so I think I may have to go alone thats why I gave back word on the job offer last year. But the dream and longing to go to Australia just wont go away, so the decision it tough. Hope going on holiday in May alters how he feels.
