New and confused as well

Hi All

We have been reading up for the last 6 weeks going through what we thought was everything, including reading advice on PIO before coming to the decision that we want to come to Oz with our 3 kids and go for a Skilled migration visa, my husband is an upholsterer and is on every list going SOL, MODL, ENSOL.

We have family in Queensland and NSW so it is great that we will have a support network.

We then went to start the application for OH to do the TRA and they have stopped assessing people who do not have certificates in their chosen career, my husband has been an Upholsterer for 8 years but has no formal qualifications.
I on the other hand have qualifications up the ying yang but not for the job I have been doing for the last 6 years.
I have a question in that my qualifications are adequate for a Hotel or Motel Manager on the SOL list which would be assessed by VETASSESS but, I work as an administrator in one job and an accounts administrator in my second job.
Would it be wrong to apply for a skilled visa on my qualifications even though I have no intention of working in that field.
From what I understand VETASSESS only looks at qualifications and not work experience.

Confusion Confusion

Hi Welcome to the site!

i'm afraid I cant help much with your questions. However I do know that on a 136 skilled visa you dont have to do the job you were assessed on when you get to Oz.

I'm sure someone else will be able to help a bit more. if not it might be worth calling some agents and having a free consultation where they should be able to answer your questions.

Hi Esther

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

I am pretty sure that the skilled 136 has been closed to new applicants wef 1 Sept 2007. It was replaced with the subclass 175 visa on that date, but I think the criteria are the same.

Best wishes

Gill

At the risk of sounding like an agony uncle:

Dear confused

You can nominate any occupation on SOL and, if you have a qualification equivalent to an Australian Diploma, you can nominate any 40 point occupation where VETASSESS are the authority. If you are the holder of a qualification equivalent to an Australian degree you can nominate any 40 or 50 point occupation where VETASSESS are the authority. Assuming you can score the required points, your application will live or die on what your recent work experience is classified as by DIAC. If they classify your experience as something not on SOL, e.g bookkeeper or general clerk, then this strategy will not work for you.

Regards

Thanks Tony

I have spoken to the High Commission this morning and they have just told me the same thing, it is a real pain as there are soooooooooooo many jobs being advertised that would be perfect for my husband and for myself, I was told by the Australian Commission that our only chance now really is to get a Visa on the ENS or wait until TRA decide to look at applications on work experience and not just certification. It does amaze me that my husbands 8 years of upholstery experience will not be assessed due to not having a piece of paper to say he can do the job, surely all his employers can vouch for him.
