Vetassess practical for carpenters

Hello

I am applying using an agency to emigrate to cairns. I have to sit a practical assesment throught vetassess. I am a time served carpenter and can not seem to find anyone who knows what things are done in the test. The agency are happy to take the money if i accept that i might fail the test. As i don't know what i will exactly be tested on it is hard to carry on. if Anyone has any advised on all the things do in the test. i would be greatful.

Thankfully I passed my initial application by doing the TRA. Ive spoken to a few other carpenters who've done the vetassess thingy and they've all told me that the hardest thing was having to do a scale model of a full hip roof.

Obviously as most of the time we only do the pre-fab sort, so going back to the dark ages when hip roofs where all marked out and cut by hand..(yep, i'm that old!!!) you kinda find yourself well out of practice.

Hi Brollo 13

I too will be doing the pratical skills test(heading for oz in 2010 i hope), After reading some threads on here its like this.

Basicaly they will test you on a few practical tests such as cutting a hip roof and making a saw bench nothing too testing im sure youll fly through ,generally theyll just watch how you go about the job and handle the tools ,probably ask you what they are and what there used for?

Just dont worry fella should be a piece of p**s hehe
good luck

Hi Neil,

I am hoping to aim for 2010 too. So it would be the April test. Have filled in the self assessment profile but only managed to tick half the boxes as have never done scaffolding and excavations. Were you the same? or did you tick all the boxes?

Hi Brollo 13
When I passed my tra I was lucky you did not have to be qualified. But I decided to still gain the qualification as I thought it may help me when we go to OZ. They do not do the City & Guilds any more what I did was my NVQ level 2 which I gained through on-site assessments over 3 months. I don't Know but if you get your NVQ would you still need to go through the vettassess? It may be worth looking into.

Best of luck

The oldgit

Hi Bryan

yes only ticked two boxes in each section but dont worry, as long as you know how to do it, then you can ,you could always read up the week b4 you attend ,any way they just want to keep out the chancers (who can blame them) as for scaffolding if youve used tower scaffold then its a yes, cause you cant work off ladders any more. dont be put off mate just be confident ..

good luck
