working hours/ 457 visa/ guide book

Please help me! I am considering coming out on a 457 visa. Do I have to work full time hours? The info on the immigration web site seems to conflict itself.
I am confused about visa's. If I don't chose to go for sponsorship, which visa as a midwife should I apply for. Does sponsorship make the process easier? Should I use a migration assistance company if I don't go for sponsorship. Lastly, Can anyone recommend a guide book that was their bible when moving.

Firstly you cant just Choose to go on a 457 you need an employer to sponsor you to obtain the 457 as the company has to lodge an application to bring you over,it is usually the only option some haveThen when you have worked for them for 2 years unless you have a positive skills assesment you can apply for a permanent visa,If you can get here on a skilled visa then go for it that way personally i would use an agent ,as they know the legal side and what to do to keep you right,most will give you 10-15 mins free time on the phone and let you know where you stand
best of luck

Thanks Billy. I already have a possible sponsor, just don't know if this is my best option. I take it you used an agent. Who did you use?

Thanks. It's all a minefield. I am in the process of completing my application and CV for Job at present and can go for sponsorship if I get it. Do you know about the working hours on 457. Do i have to work 38 hours/week? That is the thing that is making me reconsider visa options. I'm a single mum who is having to think carefully what and how to do things for the best. I am looking to come to Perth too. Have just been out for a month and loved it. Can't wait to get back!

Hi Judith

Please see this factsheet:

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skill...sa_holders.pdf

On a temporary 457 visa you can work for less than 38 hours a week but you have to be paid the Gazetted salary and that is based on 38 hours a week. A prospective employer is unlikely to want to pay the full statutory minimum amount unless you work for 38 hours a week, I would think.

Australian employers such as hospitals, and thee recruitment agencies they use, tend to prefer the temporary 457 visa to start with because it can be processed very quickly, thereby getting the skilled worker out to Australia fast. It also gives them a chance to assess the worker's performance before deciding whether to make any further commitment to the person concerned.

Espcially if you want to work for less than 38 hours a wek, I suspect that you need to look into the subclass 175 visa instead. That is a skilled independent visa, is new and is fast track once you have the skills assessment, and when you get to Oz you are free to negotiate for any job that suits you.

I suspect that the easiest option for you, by miles, would be to ring round some Registered Migration Agents at this stage. They are usually wiling to give you afree 10 or 15 minutes on the phone and if you ring a couple of them, you would then be much clearer about what your options are and what factors you need to consider.

The three Agents most frequently recommended on here seem to be:

Go Matilda, in Southampton;

Ian Harrop & Associates, near Oxford;

Visa Bureau - I'm not sure where they are but a Google search would reveal all.

I know that Go Matilda help a lot of nurses & midwives. I don't know about the others.

Best wishes

Gill
