spousal visas - what should the letters from friends say?

Hi one and all

My wife (Australian) and I have been married over 5 years now and are going to move to Sydney in June/July. I am from the UK and wondered what the letters from your firneds should say? How much info do the immigration people need?

Also we are expecting our first child next month, do I need to include on my visa application or does this need to be added at a later date after she has been born?

As you can imagine, it's hard trying to think of all the visa requirements and baby requirements...if I had hair I would have pulled it out by now!!

Many many thanks in advance
Danny

Hi Danny,

I've just had my spouse visa granted and we only asked one friend to fill out a stat dec form (think it is form 888) and then it had to be witnessed by someone, we chose a friend who is a teacher. The form basically asks how long the person had known me and how do they know us as a couple.

We didn't ask any other friends and we didn't submit any personal letters apart from the ones we wrote ourselves. I would mention your child to be on your form (although I don't know if it is essential), I mentioned my children even though they are not on my visa as they have citizenship by descent which is what you will be able to apply for as soon as your baby is born.

Hope this helps
Wendy

Hi, I am doing the same at the mo too! Where are you heading. Have you tried to call the Australian house in London, my other half has and they have been very helpful. They told us that the form 888 is not really required if not in Oz already and we can just get a letter from a friend etc. With regards to your child, they will inherit Oz citizenship from there mother and as your visa would have already gone in you should not need to give details of them, although if you have a case officer by the time baby is born i suppose it wouldn't hurt to drop them a line letting them know. You could also mention the forthcoming birth of your child in your statements about each other. (I think i am right so if anyone knows different please let me know!) Once they are born you would simply need to apply for Oz citizenship for them and then using that form send for a Oz passport for them. This is what we have done with our two children! Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the quick replies.

My partner is going to contact Australia House and see what they have to say, it is a bit of pain that they want to confirm the relationship is true even after 5 years of marriage. Did either of you have to send in any proof of relationships i.e. wedding invites etc?

Lareina, we are off to 5 docks in Sydney...I can't wait to get away from the UK (love the country but time for a change).

Wendy, how long did it take to get your visa?

Danny

We had to send off a certified copy of our wedding certificate but didn't bother with invitations mainly because it's not something I keep anyway.

It took about 3 and a half months for my visa to come through but that was only because something came up on my medical and it needed further investigation on the whole I think it takes on average about 6 weeks.

It's really pretty straightforward once you start getting everything together and it's one of the simplest visas to apply for so try not to get wound up about it and ask as many questions as you need because it all becomes clearer then, that is what the majority of people on here do and I certainly did/do. I didn't have a clue when I got started and I didn't use an agent and am very glad I didn't as that money will be put to better use somewhere else along the line.

Hi Danny,

All we did was to get three friends to write a letter stating How they know us, how long they have known us and why they feel our relationship is real. They wrote about joint holidays, our wedding etc. Our CO hasn't asked for anything else. We did also include statements from two Australian citizens as requested.
Hope this helps

I am only speaking from info we have gathered...we have just finished putting everything together for the visa. Oz house in London told us that the turn around time at the moment is rather quick and advised us to send it fully loaded (inc medicals) which i am led to bel they dont normally request straight away. We have gained two statements from relatives in Oz and two from friends here. We have also obtained two letters from our mortgage lender and bank to confirm how long we have had a joint mortgage and bank account etc. I'm kinda going with the every little helps route! Like i said i think if you also make reference to the forthcoming arrival of your baby in your statements that will help also! Good luck and like Wendy said its rather easy to apply for spouse visa so dont worry! Best of luck! I will be sending mine off in the next couple of weeks...I wanted to wait till we had interest in the house!

Thank you all for your help, that does seem the best way possible....give them more than enough info so they don't need to keep asking for more.

I've sent off for my police check, booking a health check tomorrow and then get letters etc together. All very exciting..hopefully this time in 6 months a whole new life will begin.

Many thanks again

Danny
