What are the chances of obtaining PR on a 457?

Hi,

Does anyone know the chances of obtaining PR status if they come over to oz on a 457 visa? We know this would be the only route for us, but we are concerned we would come over on the 457 and then be rejected for the PR when we apply after 2 years.
Can anyone tell us what we could do to avoid that happening?!

Also can you please tell us the what restrictions would be on us - for example buying a house, schooling, medical care etc...

Thanks in advance for any answers...

Hi, We are over on a 457 and from what i gather (someone will correct me if i am wrong) you need a company (or company you come over with) to sponsor you for PR. Not sure about the buying house bit as we are not even concidering buying until we know we get PR then we dont have that struggle selling if we dont get PR, we are in process of sorting school out for our kids of which will cost $4500 perchild per year for school including another $110 perchild admin fee (i have just rang for us enquiring the other day) they can go in any public school proividing they have spaces and head teacher needs to sign her/his part on the application form then it takes approx upto 10 days for approval then the children can start school. Medical well you do need private medical and is part of the terms and conditions of the 457 with the company but is your job to sort, we have gone with medicare which is for Reciprocal care of which is Immediately Necessary Care Only as apparently when i rang a private company they told me to go to medicare first as we would get the same cover for a fraction of the price they charge so i have done that and it is straight forward to do aswell. Hope this helps and feel free to ask anything else Good luck with everything

Hi Guys,

We are also on a 457 and hope to apply after 2 years via ENS. You only have to play for schooling in NSW on this visa not in any other states at the moment. Lynne is correct about the medcare we just have the reciprical agreement (and hubby is in plaster at the moment)!! You can buy but you dont get the $7000 first time homebuyers grant or the stamp duty waiver and you need to apply for permission to buy but I gather its just a formality.

Good Luck

You DONT need to wait the 2 years IF you have a positive skills assesment, & assuming your employer is happy with your work & willing to sponsor you on a permanent 856 visa as is what is happening to us as we speak, and weve only been in oz since beginning of august

After 18 months we got PR via the ENS route. Took us bout 6 months to get PR as I had to see medical consultant regarding my epilepsy. Nervewracking but we got there in the end

Hi

We are going on 457 , and my employer has said they will start the process of PR for us after 3 months when we have settled. We dont have to pay schooling fees in Victoria and won't be buying a house until we are absolutely sure its for us.

Billy B - did you get your skills assessment done before you left UK. How did you do it and how long did it take.

Cheers
