teaching skills assessment

Hi,
I am a primary school teacher and currently in the process of having my teaching qualification assessed. I am a little worried because I did a 3 year BA with QTS. Am I right in understanding that this is not the Australian equivalent to 4 years study? Is there anybody out there who has had this same problem and if so what have you done to overcome it? Would my induction year account for the fourth year of study as an NQT perhaps? Please help, I have been working towards moving to Oz for the previous 7 years (3 of which were at uni on the wrong bloody course!!) Any suggestions and pointers would be greatly received!

Loobie

Hi there,

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you will not pass the skills assessment if you haven't completed 4 years of teritary study. I failed my teaching skills assessment two years ago in pretty much the same position as you. I had done the 3 yr BA in Primary Education with QTS and had 6 years teaching experience and failed. I was also told that my NQT year didn't count because you don't spend it at uni. After many emails back and forth between myself and the assessment body I went back to uni part time in September 2005 and worked bluddy hard for a year (still teaching as well) and got my Masters. This set me back about £2000 of our aussie savings but it was worth it. I passed my skills assessment second time round and now have MA after my name!

The other thing is you also have to register with whichever state you are going to be living in - they require you to have completed 4 years at uni as well.

Teachers here can't believe that I had to go back to uni - they were under the impression that a teaching degree from an English uni was a high class one and that 3 years should be acceptable.

If you've got any more questions on this subject, fire away! I'm now living in Mornington, have done 2 months as a supply teacher and have a teaching post for January - I'm living proof that where there's a will, there's a way!

HI Loobie

Don't think i can answer your question but my husband and i are both teachers and have just started the visa process. We are using an agent - Go Matilda - They answered all specific questions regarding our eligibility and the details of our degrees to see if we qualify. It might be worth giving one of the agents a ring - they're very helpful and would give you a free initial assessment which should clarify your position. Go Matilda have been very helpful for us but there are loads of agents and many are discussed on here. All would be able to help.

Good Luck - let me know how you get on.

Regards Natalie
