Teaching skills ass with spouse visa?

Hello there,

Hmm, having a bit of a dillema!
In the next month or two I am planning on applying for a spouse visa. I already have the form (47SP) and i have noticed question 84 (Have you ever been given written permission by the department to work in Australia?). I do intend on working as a secondary school teacher upon arrival and so I thought it might be wise to get my skills recognised first and therefore, I can answer 'YES' to question 84 (in the hope that I may seem more desirable). However, the 'Teaching Skills Assessment' form specifically says, "Teaching Australia only conducts skills assessment for migration under the General Skilled Migration program." This seems to say, "don't bother", so the question is, how do I get my skills recognised before lodging a spouse visa?
Has anyone else had the same problem?

Hi there,

If you are not coming out on a skilled visa (and I may be wrong) you don't need to get your skills assessed. I would contact the education department for the state in which you will be living and ask them if you need a skills assessment. You do need to be registered to teach in each of the states though and a skills assessment does not guarantee that you will get a successful registration. The skills assessment simply indicates that yes you do have the skill that you say you do fro the skilled migration purpose.

From what I can remember when I registered to teach in Victoria I did not need to send them my details of my skills assessment, they simply wanted uni transcripts, certificates and a reference that covered their registration criteria.

Thank you for the advice. We are unsure of which state we would like to move to so haven't made enquires to the education departments as of yet.
When you applied to the department in Victoria, did you need to provide original certificates/transcripts or did you need certified copies?
In my excitement/confusion about the 'skilled assessment', I had all my documents certified by my solicitor (I was originally going to apply for skilled migration until I realised I only had 115 points - ooops!). Now I'm worried I've wasted my time and money - no doubt the Ed Dpt to which I will apply will want up to date certified copies by someone in Australia.

I was still in the UK when I got my registration with the Victorian Institute. I had loads of copies of stuff done by a solicitor and used them for the application. I'm pretty sure that most places for registration would hate for you to send them the originals of your documents - it isn't worth the stress of worrying if they were to get lost etc! Do make sure that among your documents you have a univeristy transcript of the course and proof of how much time you spent on teaching practice during your training - this is a big requirement!

Hello again!

I have been looking into getting my skills recognised with AEI-NOOSR and this seems to be the best option if we don't know which state we will be living in. AAARGH! I would be happy to just choose a state and go but my fella thinks (and he's probably right) we should travel round a little, then make our decision.
I can't help feeling that it would be more practical to know where we were going so we could at least attempt to get jobs and accommodation sorted before we go (we are only attemping OZ for a year by the way - but you never know). My partner is an IT Manager so he can apply and get a job pretty much all year round but teachers need to time things right - I understand from other threads that teachers are finding it difficult to land steady jobs!?!

You do need to look into this carefully. I'm not sure how you would go about working as a temp teacher whilst travelling, you need to check out whether you need a temporary registration or things like that. I have been working as a supply teacher this term and have had to show my victorian registration card at just about all of the schools even though the agency I work for have checked all of that before allowing me to work for them.

Yes there are some people finding it difficult to get work as a teacher. I have been lucky so far, I have had a fair bit of work up until last week. It's getting quiet now as it is nearly the end of term. I have also managed to get a job for next year. Others are struggling to get supply work so it is tough as a teacher even though it is supposedly a skill that is required - that's how I got over here!
