Hi all, I'm planning on moving to Perth as soon as I sell my house. My plan is to just get a flight, spend a month or so finding my way and sort a sponsorship/work visa out. Then go off to Asia whilst it gets sorted and go back on a working visa. Is it possible to do this or am I away with the faries as usual.
I'm not sure but alan one of the agents who comes on here will surely know. I think it's a brilliant plan if you can do it that way and have no ties - so good luck to you
Ali

A lot of threads I read on this forum have thanked everyone for been so helpful. There's one lady already in Oz posted a thread about nothing inparticular after this one last week and got 10+ replies, I on the other hand am sat here in Grimsby checking this daily for the answer to a fairly important question. Is it my user name? The plasterer as opposed to a female's name? Never mind but thanks for reading about my situation, and if you haven't yet and I apologise for sounding miserable.
I have moved your thread to the Migration Issues section to make sure that Alan Collett is likely to see it next time he logs on to the forum.
Nobody is ignoring you, hun. I think the real problem is that none of us really know enough to say whether your idea would work and what the implications might be even if it does work.
I will do my best to help pro tem, but Alan is the one who can give you proper advice about this.
It is an uphill battle to find employers in Oz who are willing to sponsor new migrants for visas. What they really want are people who already have an absolute right to live & work in Australia.
I think there is a high chance that 95% of the people whom you might approach are likely to say, "I'd be delighted to take you on. Come back once you've got a visa and have moved here." Finding the one guy who is likely to listen and to agree to sponsor you is going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack, I suspect, and a month is not long in which to do that.
I think the visa shale-up on 1 Setember 2007 might be a factor here, too. Time was when somebody like you could join a Recruitment Agency. The Agency itself could sponsor you for a 457 visa, making the Agency your technical employer. They could then sub you out to Contractors, leaving the Contractor himself outside the "visa loop" - where he, ideally, wants to be.
However, the 1st Sept changes are designed to deter, if not completely prevent, this, to judge from the commentaries I've read. The new "push" seems to be to get the end-employer to sponsor the skilled migrant directly. With a bigger organisation (eg a hospital in need of lots of nurses) the push seems to be to get them to use Labour Agreements rather than the 457 visa. A Labour Agreement is a type of visa but that is all I can tell you about them.
I think that with a smaller employer (eg our hypothetical contractor) the 457 route is not closed, but you would really need Alan to explain this in more depth.
In theory, if Plan A works, yes - you could go and wait in Singapore or Bali whilst your visa application is processed. However, when you weigh up the costs of a spell in Singapore - given that anything could happen that might delay the visa processing - it is probably cheaper to return to the UK and wait here. Bear in mind that DIAC require a residential address for the visa applicant and I doubt that Ah Bong's Beach Huts would quite cut the mustard in this regard unless the visa applicant happens to be Ah Bong himself....
I think a month's reccie to Perth would do no harm at all, but that you should do it on the basis that it would be a hit & miss experiment only with absolutely no certainty of success. If you succeed, great. If you don't, you would have a much better idea of what you might be up against. But I think you should approach it with your eyes wide open, my friend.
Cheers
Gill

Dont know if this is much help, but my daughter came out on a holiday Feb this year decided she was not going back applied for working Visa online when here, went to singapore for a week her visa was granted within 24hours. She then found a job who are sponsoring her for her permanent Visa although she was only supposed to work for a short period with one company this was waivered by immigration and she has been with same comapny for 9 months so far and should here about Permanent Visa soon. She is unattatched, 25 has a Law degree and all her family are living over here so I suppose she ticks quite a few of the boxes required. Dont know if this will be any help but if you want this life badly enough you will find a way, good luck.
Thanks Freckles, your daughter ticks a few of my boxes too but I'm 32 so that's not an option for me. I've since spoken to a guy at an immigration agency and he reckons he can have me out there in February. He say's he has been approached by companies to get brickies and plasterers. So all I need now is someone to buy my house. I don't suppose anyone on here's wanting a move to Grimsby. Thankyou too Gill, I'll keep you posted, Chris.
I can't really help you but have you considered going to an Expo. I know of 2 people that went to an expo and they resulted in getting sponsors. Just a thought..
I have been to Grimsby once........ it rained

The key of course is finding the employer who is happy to sponsor. Presenting yourself in person with a well drafted CV is far more likely to secure a visa than sending it from the other side of the world - so the strategy makes sense.
Note that you might not have to depart Australia if the visa application is lodged before the expiry of the ETA, and is for an employer sponsored visa. A general skilled visa application submitted at this stage would be an offshore application and would necessitate your leaving Australia when the ETA expires.
If you would like to discuss further please telephone my colleague Marina Towner on 023 80 488777 (Southampton). Marina can discuss your visa options and your strategy more fully in an initial freebie telephone conversation.
Feel able to submit your CV here as well, and we can then try to seek out an employer or two for you to meet: Find a Job in Oz
Best regards.
