Question Fitter job description

Hello all NICE TO SEE YOU TO SEE YOU NICE XXXX
it's been a loooooong time since I was on here because we were told by agent to wait until next feb and my grandad died and ..... well time flies but I have been checking in to read about everybody and it looks like more and more people are doing it!!!
I am just so worried that we won't ever get there - we were thinking of applying under Dave who has qualifications as a panel beater but for the past 4 years has worked as a field service engineer on fork lift trucks and production machinery and now on mechanical lifts but in oz their job titles are different to ours and the closest I think to his experience is a fitter but does it mean something different there?????
Any advice from people who know what a fitter is and does or any other jobs which would fit his experience would be much appreciated just feels impossible at the minute and so annoying because all his sorts of jobs he has done are on the modl but he hasn't got 1 lot of experience or quals he can use.

There are many sub-groups to the job "Fitter" and they are (or were?) more or less equally grouped or recognised in the UK.
Fitter-turner
Maintenance fitter or machnie tool fitter
Toolroom fitter
to name just a few.

They all use hand tools as well as machine tools to make or repair machinery, plant and equipment.
Its still the case in Australia that you have to do a four year apprenticeship to qualify as a skilled fitter. In the UK there is (or was) the semi-skilled fitter classification. This class of fitter doesn't seem to exist here in Australia... I haven't heard reference to it here but there might be regions or states which do?
The difference between semi-skilled and skilled fitter for all practical purposes is that a fully skilled fitter should be able to make or repair a whole range of equipment and not just one specific type. In practice it depends on individual competencies of course.
The trade appraisal part of migration seems to be complex and its probably a good idea to spend some money on a reputable migrancy agent if you think that you're not in a clear cut situation.
Good Luck

Hi Donna,

I was a technician in the RAF from 87 - 96 and have since been working maintaining machines / fitting removing machine tools etc. in Germany in a factory producing car parts.
On the advice of my agent I applied to the TRA to be recognised as a fitter and passed under Pathway D ( which I think is still not accepted at the moment ) which is for people who have no qualifications in the field but have at least 6 years work experience.

As fatpom wrote, there are many different areas which could class someone as being a fitter and also many different tasks within these areas, and therefore, the best way forward would be to contact an agent and get them to look at qualifications and CV etc and they will advice you on the best way to go about it and this advice is normally free. Many on here recommend Go Matilda and I can highly recommend mine too Nach Australien auswandern | AVIN, as I said they were really helpful and without there help there's no way I would have passed the TRA.

Good luck
and if you've got any detailed questions you can pm me anytime

Mark

Hiya ,,id ask your agent as they will cross match your skills to the best possible visa.My hubby was a diesel mechanic but the agent looked into it and his skills matched that of diesel fitter which was on the wanted list, thus we got the 136 visa. They are the people who should know these things and give you the right advice after all that what your paying them for,,good luck with everything
