Smile Points - Visa Type

Hi,

I have just received my Skills Assessment back, which is positive, i am about to apply for a visa but i am unsure which one to apply for.

My preferred visa would be a:

Skilled – Independent (Migrant) visa (subclass 175)

I fall short on the points though:

Age:28 - 30 points
English Language Ability - 25 points
Nominated skilled Occupation - Architectural Associate - 40 points
Occupation/work experience - 5 points
Occupation in demand/job offer - 15 points

115 points, and i need 120, does anyone know of a possible way in which i can gain these extra 5 points? The only way i can see, is if i get a job offer, this would add 5 points to my total giving me 120, i would imagine its quite hard to get a job offer though living on the other side of the world?

If i cannot apply for this visa, which visa would you apply for?

Thank-you for your help, I am very confused :)

Matt

If you have a partner with a recognised skill, having their skills assessed would get you an extra five points.
Presumably you realise you have to do IELTS to get the 25 points for English?

Yes, i understand that i have to do the IELTS test, i dont imagine this would be an issue though. I dont have a partner, so no points would be awarded there unfortunately :(

Hi there, first post on here even though I have been keeping up with all the news and gossip for a while and lovin it. In regards to your problem with the points, I can't see any other option for yourself other than to get that job offer for that particular visa. The visa options have changed since we put our application in and it looks to me that there are a lot more options for people wanting to migrate. As for the 25 points for the english language (not meaning to be a pest Impatient) but I'm pretty sure you don't need to do an IELTS test. here is what is states on the immi website for IELTS:

Exemptions: Applicants who hold a passport from one of the countries listed below will not be required to sit the IELTS test to demonstrate that they meet the English language threshold:
  • United Kingdom (UK)
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • United States of America (USA)
  • Republic of Ireland.
Good luck with it all and I hope you get something sorted.

Cheers,

Kevin n Christine

yep, you get 15 points automatically for holding the passport, need to do IELTS for the extra 10! That is why so many on here are native to UK but doing IELTS - for many of us it is the only way of making up the 120 points! Not being a pest, it is good to share and check understanding.

Hiya,
my oh is doing ielts as we are in the same situ as you. We get the extra 10 points needed and then loose 5 in March when hubby turns 40 ( if he passess) :@. He is travelling to York in
December and has bought a book from amazon to help him ( read it once though). Have you got family there who can support your sponsorship?

I have distant family, i dont really think they would count though! How do they sponsor you, is it just financially? I think the only was will be the 'job offer' route, i dont quite know how this would work though? Once your visa was granted, would you have to take that particular job?

Matt,
I think job sponsorship means that you have to stay at the company for 12 or 24months. Sorry I can't help you anymore, still learning

HIYA THE ONLY WAY TO GET AJOB OFFER IS TO EMAIL THE COMPANIES WITH YOUR CV AND EXPLAIN YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES . WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE IN OZ IN MARCH AND O/H JUST WENT TO COMPANIES AND HAD A SORT OF PREINTERVIEW- HE HAS BEEN LUCKY TO SECURE AND OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT WHICH HAS BEEN SENT WITH APPLICATION . HE IS NOT HOWEVER TIED TO THIS COMPANY SHOULD VISA BE GRANTED.
IF YOU ACTUALLY GET SPONSORED BY A SPECIFIC COMPANY YOU ARE TIED IN
HOPE THIS ALL MAKES SENSE LOL
