Having had a nosey round the Qantas site, the question of whether they have to stop at Singapore en route to Perth can be answered: Yes, they do, and for between 1hr 10mins and 2hrs 40mins depending on the flight.
So SA certainly win all round in this particular case, and your Brain of Qantas may be more than just a little guilty of a teensy bit of miss-selling......
All Uk to Perth flights MUST stop somewhere to refuel. Only singapore Airlines new a380 could do it, but the lights on the Perth runway need changing. So until Perth upgrades it's runway we won't be seeing it here.

I just had to laugh at seeing "Qantas" and "special offer" in the same sentence! That's just like putting Reliant Robin and land speed record together, or Liverpool and city of culture! (Oops, that'll upset the Scousers.....)
Cheeky !!!!! we won fair and square :) think we will be going with SA after reading this thread... Mandy what is Moving Planet (apols for my denseness but am a Scouser)
This Special Offer from Qantas deserves world-wide publicity, in my view. They are hiding their generous light under a bushell. it seems to me.
I asked interestedly whether the extra £250 for the extra baggage that the passenger might not pitch up with would also include an automatic and free upgrade to Business Class all the way? The Brain of Britain at Qantas said "No."
Seems to me that we have to resolve the question of whether or not Qantas land in Singapore while en route from London to Perth?
If they still do, then I suspect Colonel Mustard in the Library with the Candlestick......
Cheers

Hi Gill,
As you know I fly with qantas one way to Sydney from Manchester at a cost of 483 smackeroonies, still only with 20k baggage despite my arguing at great length with qantas, Manchester to Healthrow terminal 1 (change planes and catch a train all the way to terminal 4) then board another plane for Singapore and sit there for 1 and 1/2 hours while they refuel etc., and then on to Sydney so yes they do go via Singapore, dont know about Perth though, theyve maybe found the secret of everlasting air fuel

Hiya all,
We're flying with Air NZ in Dec one way via LA and its cost £2800 for 3ad & 1ch. Not sure how this compares with going via Singapore/Hongkong but I would imagine its slightly more expensive. BUT going via America means we all get 2 suitcases weighing 23kgs, so 46kgs each. Our visas are already validated so I assumed we would struggle to get double the allowance going via the east.
Only problem now is carting all the bloomin' cases around America where we're staying til January!

Hi Barbara
I had you in mind when I rang Qantas yesterday because when I read what they had told you, I thought, "Surely there has been a mistake here, somewhere?" Far from it. They told me the same as they told you.
I've also spoken with their HQ in Sydney because I think it is time to start rattling sabres. The relevant chap is called Justin, apparently. He was conveniently "in a meeting" of course. I left a message encouraging Justin to read this thread and to join PiO and respond if he thinks he can justify Qantas' position where you are concerned.

Hi Dve
Thank you for your research. I suspected that Qantas still stop in Singapore, but I wanted independent confirmation of the idea.
It was not my place to tell the world about the fact that Barbara Townend is the PiO Member whom Qantas are treating abominably, in my opinion. They told me the same as they told Barbara, so there is no mistake about this "Special Offer" from them. A Reliant Robin of a "Special Offer" as you say!!!!
I cannot see ANY reasonable basis for Qantas to behave differently from other airlines about the baggage allowance. I have been in touch with Qantas HQ and have invited them to comment on this thread.
Let us see whether they do because Customers tend to vote with their feet in my experience.....
Emirates have contrived to beat Singapore Airlines into second place in terms of popularity with customers. Singapore are a VERY hard act to follow, so Emirates must be really special. Funny how Qantas don't even get a mench in these unofficial League Tables, though.
Here on PiO, we are entitled to our opinions. I think the way Qantas have treated Barbara is very shabby. I hope they will change their minds and join the Real World.
