Am currently going through the migration process having been offered a sponsored job in Queensland and have filled in all the forms required and have scheduled our medicals etc..
The one thing I am not sure how to progress are the police checks - are these something I have to instigate or are they instigated by those wanting the information?
Not an expert but since we literally sent off ours last weekend thought I'd pop you a quick reply (OH and I are in Singapore though, so not sure if it's different for those in England). We had to supply police checks for those countries that we have lived in for over 12 months in the last 10 years. Since Cambridge was the last place that we lived in before moving out here, we just sent off those forms as it can take a while for these to get back to Oz. Cost us 10 quid each and we had to provide some proof of identity and address, plus fill in a short form. Job done! Best to check with your local constabulary about getting the forms as they may differ...

Hiya ,,i phoned our local head office in Manchester and the lady emailed me a form there and then ,you simply fill it in and go to your local station with the fee(i think its 10gbp) and form,,job done ,,you will recieve the cert in the post and just forward it to Oz.Alternatively you can just go to the station and ask for the forms but make sure you get the right one for migration,,good luck
Cal x
p.s ,,ours took the full 40 days so do it sooner rather than later as the wait really held us up..

Thats what I wanted to know - many thanks, and I hope to be in Brisbane early next year.

I worked 12 years in the pit here, 7 hour shifts & it took us 40 mins to get to the coal face & the same to get out, it was a good job until they closed the place down, I think it was political back then as they couldn't get underground miners to go to Queensland, getting put off made a lot of people move.
I went to a place called Moura for a look, the wife refused to move there, thank God she did as the pit blew up some months later & they lost all that were underground at the time, it was too dangerous to try and retrieve the bodies so they filled the mine in.
Where is the mine situated in Queensland ?
Quite a few of my old mates worked around Blackwater & Emerald, they loved it and are now retired on the coast up that way.

Initially I will be working in the Moranbah - Dysart area and FIFO from Brisbane. I spent most of my mining life in opencast coal, and judging from the things I have researched there is a long future for that industry in Oz. I cant wait to get there and get started, just wish the visa proces was quicker - mind you I can't imagine what it must be like working in that heat day in day out
Don't worry about the heat Dave, the majority of offices, big trucks etc have air conditioners, it is a dry heat in that part of Queensland, so not as bad with the humidity as it is in Brissie.
Think of the positives, good drinking weather & only a couple of hours to the Barrier Reef, all the best in your endeavors.
Trevor.
Re police checks we went to our local police station had no forms but gave us the number to request the forms, but we downloaded them off the Greater Manchester Police web page. Filled them in got them verified, took id and money £10 each and they did the rest it takes 40 days to process
