Vickiw89
Hi guys, Hoping someone can help me! My partner and I were due to apply for a 489 in QLD until my occupation was taken off the list for the state. Before we decided on Qld, I had a job offer from an employer in Tasmania. We are pretty stuck with our options and have started looking into employer sponsored visa's. We would prefer a 186/187 but understand this can be a lot of work for the employer which they may not want to do, if that is the case then fair enough. What I would like to know is when applying for a 186/187 you need to declare that you have the intention of working for that employer for 2 years, what would happen if I didn't for any reason, such as taking a different job, or that job not lasting for 2 years? Thanks in advance, Vicki.

Thanks in advance, Vicki. Once you have a permanent residency visa then it just that, permanent. I would be surprised if the employer would sponsor a permanent visa for you, because there will be no protection for them if you did decide to just leave or go to work somewhere else. Also, not all companies are able to sponsor permanent residents. But, there's nothing to actually stop them sponsoring you if they are eligible and if you managed to convince them to go that way. You have the option of applying for a 457 with employer sponsorship, which gives some degree of protection to the employer that you can't easily leave without getting another company to sponsor you. Then after a while if the employer is happy then they can sponsor you for permanent residency.
Vickiw89
Thanks for your reply, I did think that would be the case, but wanted to double check! It is obviously a big ask for a company and I'm unsure of whether my employer would want to go ahead with it, I do have a contract with her already so I thought it was worth an ask! VERYSTORMY
Even if you were offered a 187, that is tied to the employ for 2 years. Be very careful of the issues with a 457 and if you decide to go down that route, treat it as a temporary move.
Vickiw89
Yeah we know that is the case for the 187 too. Not overly keen on a 457, it would be our very last resort. If the 186/187 doesn't work out then we will be looking to gain pr in New Zealand, only then if that fails would we consider a 457!
