When you applied, your sponsor needed to be in a designated area.

You now have a visa that allows you to live in a specific regional area.

Do not mix the two up. They are not the same and I believe the designated area includes more areas so you do not want to accidentally breach your visa because you mix these up.

You do not have to stay in Adelaide or SA.

The entire SA is considered regional and since you have a 489 Visa (which is regional sponsored) and your sponsor being in SA, then you're required to stay there only if you intend to apply for permanent residency later. Since one requirement you need to satisfy for the bridging visa is to reside within your state sponsor for at least 2 years.

You can look here for more details:

http://www.immi.gov.au/visas/pages/489.aspx

Edit:

Logging in with your details using VEVO also provides more info about your visa type.

http://www.immi.gov.au/Services/Pages/vevo/vevo-overview.aspx

In there, outlined are the following conditions about this visa type:

Visa condition(s)8539 - While the visa holder is in Australia they cannot live, study or work outside of a regional or low growth metropolitan area. This means anywhere in Australia except in:

  • Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and the Central Coast in New South Wales

  • Brisbane and the Gold Coast in Queensland

  • Perth in Western Australia

  • Melbourne in Victoria

  • the Australian Capital Territory.

A complete listing of 'regional Australia' and 'low population growth metropolitan areas' by postcode is available.

Hope that helps.

The OP has a family sponsored visa, not a regional sponsored visa.

Hi Bungo,

The VEVO says the below, that means I can stay/live/work in any designated area irrespective of from where my relative sponsored me. Pls correct me if I'm wrong.

Visa condition(s)8549 - While the visa holder is in Australia, the visa holder must live, study and work only in a designated area of Australia. This means anywhere in Australia except in:

  • Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong in New South Wales

  • Brisbane metropolitan area in Queensland.

A complete listing of designated areas of Australia by postcode is available.

See:Designated Areas of Australia.
