Normally, I'd say "it's better to have and not need than to need and not have".
If you are quite sure of the 4.5-year timeframe, then applying for a permanent visa now isn't a bad idea (I'm supposing that's what you're thinking of applying for). A permanent visa takes about 9 to 12 months to be granted if you make the cut, and you get up to 5 years from date of grant to use the visa.
And it takes a few months to put a visa application together, so in the grand scheme of things, you should still have a valid visa in 4.5 years if all goes well.
