was just wondering if anyone whom has done the medicals or has any knowledge if a child with any additional school needs has had probs when it comes to the medicals. We are currently waiting for our youngest (7) to be assessed for the second time. He was assessed when he was 2 for autistic spectrum disorders, and was discharged giving him a a diagnosis of receptive language difficulties. Which could present with social and emotional difficulties. Now we are in year two and they think he is different!! and want him assessed. Lovely word that different!! Anyway before going on my long speil about how wonderful he is whatever label they decide to bestow upon him, I wondered if anyone knows of the aussies penalising his chances of coming here beacause of it. Asd has a wide range of difficulties, some fairly mild to others more severe, my son would only need additional support for reassurances, not really in his work too much. He would not need any medical attention ie medicines and has a clean bill of health apart from hay fever and he gets a fair amount of tonsilitis. He has gone through school without any probs, apart from him getting upset (ie, he cries)if he does not know what is going on .
If he has not understood the teacher, in a class of 30 you do not get a whole amount of attention, which is not the teachers fault it is just the way it is, but that is where he could do with a bit more support. This has only happened to a point they have brought to my attention twice in the whole year. I am told he is very well behaved and is never in trouble, just trying to paint a picci of the low level of help that may or may not be needed.
Do you think they will want his assessment done before we can complete??????
Oh thinks as it is not medical we may be ok, but I AM NOT SO SURE!!!!! Help please!
Hi my son is dyslexic - no problems with the medical and no problems with Queensland Education. He has been in school 5 weeks loving every minute and receiving brilliant help from the school. If its any help there are often ads in the paper for teaching assistants to work with kids with ASD in mainstream schools. Plus as you know every child is unique, wouldn't life be boring if kids were all the same. Enjoy having a 'different' child there are plenty of them. Hope this puts your mind at rest
Yes thanks, it does. My biggest hope is that he enjoys school again and has more fun through learning. If that can happen in Oz then I would be over the moon. Did you have to look at lots of schools ie, were some more helpful when it came to extra help than others, or did you find all could meet your requirements, and it was just a case of finding one in the suburb you had decided on living in.
Hi Jo & John
Dont worry, you'll be OK!!!! my son has Autistic Spectrum Disorder too (High functioning) it was no problems, although he is older, and we got our visa !!!!!!!!!! He too is physicallt fit, he appears quite normal (although distant) and is on no medication, so it really was'nt an issue with Panel doctor !!!
I think your son will probably do much better in Oz..... the classe sizes are smaller, there arn't as many tests, and there are more relaxed and kids seem to enjoy school - apparently!!!!!!! There always hope !!!
Good luck with it anyhow..... keep us posted.

We meant to look at lots of schools and had contacted quite a few before we got here , but when it came to it we were recommended the local school by the lady who is renting us her house and when we went were so bowled over with the school we signed them up there and then. We looked at the school Friday and they started on the Monday. The Aussie attitude is no worries and when we explained our sons situation it was great no worries, the teachers are very laid back over here !!
If our tra's are accepted, would you suggest getting in contact with schools in areas we are thinking of?
Although having read some of the threads, you can have a place in mind to live, and then be bowled over by somewhere else. I feel the right school would definitely have the overiding decision ultimately on where we would settle. A smaller class size would so suit him. Is the school your child is in state or private, obviously financially state would be preferable, but I believe private is much cheaper than in England. It would be a consideration if it felt absoloutly the right place for him.
Jonseywife, thankyou for your input, it is amazing how many parents have worries with their children, and obviously I know there are so many parents with more worries than me and hubby have, but they are our worries and we do worry and think about his difficulties everday,, as I am sure you do to. Glad to hear that there is no probs with getting the visa, I would hate to think that one of the main reasons for coming over would get stopped because of it.

Hiya no expert on this subject but my son is in normal mainstream school (he has no disabilities) but a few of his class members have dyslexia or adhd ,,they also have a seperate 'special needs class' in which they go for abit of one to one time ,all the kids one of which is our next door neighbour seem to do really well and are very happy with school life,as you say i would ring around schools in the area you fancy and see what special needs services they offer,,
