Is there anyone over in Oz already who went over on a student visa, bought a business and then applied for Permanent Residency, I would be reallly interested in hearing from you, pitfalls etc
Thanks in anticipation
Chris:)
We, like you, would like to hear from someone who has took this route or is taking this route. Do you know if we buy the business while we are studying or when we have completed our studies?.
We were all set to go this way but after talking to people on this forum and to some different agents - we were persuaded that it was a very risky way of trying to obtain residency. We were told that you could buy a business while you were studying but you are restricted in how many hours you can work in the business, best person to talk to in this forum on this subject I think is Alan Collett, ( I think thats how you spell his name). Apparently residency is achievable this way but it is not without complications. Have you run a business before, this would make things easier. Anyway I hope it all works out for you, we have decided to buy a property in Spain and to split our time between there and Australia on long holidays. I would be interested in hearing what your plans are - and what you have been told (I still would love to live full time in Australia - maybe the rules will change and they will start to let the over 50's Only just!). Good luck!

We assisted via a UK based MARA agent placing a 60 yo Irish gent at TAFE WA (cookery) who had been working in Cookery/Hospitality. Idea was that he would become formally qualifiied and open up his own busines which apparently will allow him to sponsor his partner. May still have their email address and could check how they are going, remind me if no reply... :)

Many thanks for your replies, any help is always appreciated.
We are very much at the start of the process at the moment, but this our last hope of getting to Oz as our skills are not in need - Sales & Marketing Director (Board Level) and my wife is a florist (20 years experience).
I have no worries about starting a business in Oz, especially as we have been advised that the authorities want migrants to start mainly cash businesses such as coffee shops, florists, ice cream parlours etc .These types of businesses have less chance of failing .
as they have regular cash flow unlike other businesses that invoice on 30/60 & 90 day terms. Surely this is something that many people could turn their hand to.
We have also been advised that we are the perfect ages for going this route as we have 'life experience' and we also have the finances to take over there.
The only problem that may crop up is that we wish to go to New South Wales as we have family in the Blue Mountains, and we have heard that it is much harder to be accepted by immigration as they don't want migrants moving to this part of Oz - any ideas??
I know this is an old thread but I would be interested to know what you all did or how you got on with your plans, we recently returned to the UK from Spain kept thinking we should have gone down under years ago.
We have been advised by an agent that this our only route into Australia due to ages of 50/48 and we are both very unsure about proceeding , buying a business seems a very big step but saying that some friends I have spoke to who have had a small business before can't see why we are worrying , if you buy the right business ( has to meet all the requirements of the 845 Established Business in Australia , employ 3 turnover 200k etc ) it should be ok.
We have been advised SA ( Adelaide ?) is a good location , lower prices etc and still all classed as a regional location if that helps.
