Hi we are new to this so please be nice, ::) Paul and I are 'Mature' but young hearted!!, and we have lots of family in Australia. Paul is serving in the military and I completed 25 years so will not qualify with the skills visa. Looks like the only way we could get to live in Oz is to go down the vocational student visa route and then buy a businesss and apply for residency, my question is has anybody else gone down this route and if so what where your experiences and did it all work out. Look foward to hearing your replies, thanks
Both my hubby and my daughter have had places offered to them on courses in Melbourne, starting July next year, so we're hoping it's all going to work out but nothing is definite. You probably know that a Student Visa is temporary, only lasts as long as the course, but from the advice we've had - to study a skill in demand - looks like that's how we can get to stay on afterwards. It is a risk. We know that and are still willing to try.
Before you get set on the Student Visa route, have you checked that this is your only option? You said in your thread you've got family out there? I strongly advise you to send a PM to either Alan Collett or Connaust who both post on here regularly, they will both be able to give you good advice. You can search for them on the members list on your tool bar.
Good luck
Rachel

Thanks for your reply, yes we know that the Student Visa is only temporary and we do intend to for one of us to study a skill in demand, do you mind me asking what your husband and daughter will be studying, and I know this is a bit cheeky but how old your husband is. Thanks also for the advice about contacting Alan Collett and Connaust, will do that soonest. Sounds like we are the same as we are both willing to take the risk, if we don't try we will never know. Thanks again - heres hoping

Happy to help with any questions - cheeky or otherwise! It's such a traumatic experience trying to follow all the rules and regulations of the DIMIA, I think that's why myself, and others here on PIO don't mind sharing our experiences!
Stu is 31 on Sunday and Jenna is 17. He's going to study Automotive Engineering and my daughter, a Diploma in Children's Services. We' ve had loads of help and advice from Katherine at www.studyaustralia.com.au. All of her advice and help has been free, as she gets paid by the Australian colleges to place international students. We decided that Stu would be better as the, er, student, as I am the big four-oh this year, by the time I'd be finishing the course would be 43,44 and cutting it a bit fine. So I will work the 20hrs that I'm allowed, and Stu and Jen can also work 20hrs.
We are really big fans of WA and Perth in particular, but struggled finding info on International Students in that State. Katherine is based in Melbourne, so that's where we're headed. There are at least 2 other regular posters on PIO that are also studying, they're both off to Qld.
Hi,
We are near to getting our student visas, just need our medicals ok'd which we have on 30.4.07. If all ok then Paul is going to do bricklaying in queensland for 2 years and hopefully as rachel said as it is a skill on demand we should be able to get PR as lonf as Paul does his 900 hours work experience too. He can work 20 hours in college time and what hours he wants in the holidays, I can work 20 hours per week. It is expensive as you pay for the course and we have 3 children and have to pay for them in school about £3200.00 per child per year. We are really cutting it fine as Pauls course will finish about June 09 and he will be 45 January 10 !! but as long as we apply straight away it should be fine. We also know it is alot of expense and no guarantee that we will get in at the end, but for us it is our only chance and we are willing to take the risk. If we don't get in at the end...... Well we will have had a great 2 year experiece.

Hi Chris,
Welcome to PIO
Rach and Yvonne have beaten me to it!!
We are also going out on a student visa as this is our only option at the moment. My OH is 38 at the mo and will be studying bricklaying in Nambour for two years. I would just echo what Rach/Yvonne have said about the risk with a student visa, but if you go in with your eyes wide open then it is definately a risk we are willing to take.
We have completed visa/meds and are just waiting (nailbiting!!) for the visa any day. If all goes according to plan then we will be going 2nd June 2007. (As you are allowed to enter Australia six weeks before your course starts and we thought we would have a bit of a holiday!).
From what you have said, you also have family out in Australia so it might be worthwhile speaking to an agent to see what 'skills in demand' courses are available and what areas. The courses usually start Feb or July but may vary depending on what state you choose. As Rach said the advice from an agent is free and definately worth having.
Good luck and keep us posted with how you are getting on.

Hi Chris,
I'm 41 and going to do hairdressing on the sunshine coast Feb 2008, my oh is a builder and his 47 we have 2 boys 5yrs & 18months I started the ball rolling 3 weeks ago and our agent is thisisaustralia recommended by the brownfamily(thanks heather) as long as our meds are ok we hope to leave at Christmas scared and excited!!!
Hi, thanks to everyone who has sent helpful replies, it is nice to hear that other people are going out to Oz on a student visa, we thought we were the only ones! We are hoping that Paul may be able to transfer to the Australian Air Force (the Australian army has just raised their recruitment age to 56 and we are hoping that the Air Force will do the same) if we go this way then we are certain to get citizenship, however we have to have a plan b and that is the Student visa. Thanks for the information on thisisaustralia, I have been on and had a look, are the courses that they show on there the only ones that you can do, or are there others ones that qualify, Paul quites fancies doing plumbing. I will get in touch with thisisaustralia next week to see what they say. Don't be scared about living in Oz, its a fantastic place, you will have to say hello to Brisbane ( and my sister and her family - and my dad) when you get there next year and I will definately keep posting on here, thanks again

There is nothing wrong with being a student - when I came out of the Air Force I did a 2 year BTEC in Computing and I was 44 at the time, however I have got to admit that if Paul isn't able to join the military out there then I think it would be better for Paul to do the studying as it is quite difficult to transfer his skills from the military into civilian life. I wished I had joined this site a long time ago, it gives me heart to know that other people are succeeding in getting to Australia. Thanks once again for all the info and advice
