Question I've made the decision, what do I do next!

I am a fully qualified Nissan mechanic, with 6 years experience. 3 years apprenticeship, 3 years working with the same Nissan garage. I have started to send my C.V. to some of the garages in the Brisbane area in the hope of securing a job before I go. I would like to try and do my own visa, am I mad or not? Is it best to start the ball rolling by going through the TRA, if so how do I go about it? This is all new to me. Help!
Thanks,
Woodview

Hi Woodview.

What visa are you wanting to apply for? Have you checked you will have enough points for it (although being a mechanic I should imagine so). The first step is to apply for your TRA, which is then followed by your visa application.

There are plenty of people on this site who will be more than happy to help you with any questions you have.

Good luck
Lou

If you're a motor mechanic, you'll be pleased to know your occupation is listed on demand.

In reality, there is indeed a shortage of mechanics in Australia, or at least in NSW where I'm based now. It's not easy to find good mechanics, and there's just a general shortage of them here. This means you'll get more points towards qualifying for a skilled permanent visa.

I would advise that you consider coming to Australia on a permanent visa - it's more secure and is probably more beneficial in the long run. Yes, it'll involve a longer wait, but there's no stopping you from getting sponsored on a temporary work visa while the permanent skilled visa is being processed (although it'll involve at least one trip out of Australia when the permanent visa is about to be granted, but that's another story).

Not everyone needs an agent. See this link: http://www.ptlabs.com.au/visas/faq.php#basic004

It's probably too late here in Sydney (12:38am) for me to type properly.

I meant your occupation is on the in-demand jobs list.

Thanks for that Peter.
I was told at a recent expo in London that I might need 4/5 years post training experience. I have completed all my Hitech courses as well. Is there anywhere I could find this out before I apply to the TRA so that I don't waste time or money?

This may help:
http://www.workplace.gov.au/workplace/Pages/ContentPage.aspx?NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=/workplace/Category/SchemesInitiatives/TRA/1SkillsassessmentforpeopleintendingtomigratetoAust ralia.htm&NRNODEGUID={98D6834A-A34B-4E3A-A763-F644E0924582**&NRCACHEHINT=Guest#2

If this confuses more than it explains, perhaps I could suggest that you consider consulting a registered migration agent with expertise in TRA assessments.
