Passport name change from Oz

Recommended Posts

Hi All

as per my previous (first ever) post, I am moving to Oz in June. We will have just got married so do avoid any issues with visas and travelling out there I will move with the passport in my current name. I would then want to change it out there. Has anyone got any ideas on how this process is done. Any advice is very welcome!

Thanks

Kerry

Hi Kerry

personally I think it would be easier to do it in the UK especially if you want to get a driving license etc fast.

Another option is dont change it immediately you arrive and use your old name for legal docs etc here. Take a look here as you may need to go down this routehttp://www.justice.qld.gov.au/justice-services/births-deaths-and-marriages/change-of-name/change-of-name-through-marriage

You can get your passport changed in your married name before you get married (up to 3 months before), but it wont be valid until the date of the wedding, you just need to get the person performing the ceremony to sign some form. If you have alot of time left on your passport you will get an extra 9 months added to the new one. I did this it was relativly simple and was able to book honeymoon in Married name.

As for informing DIAC, you just need to fillout form 929, information on Australia House site.

Getting new passport from Australia is alot more expensive than from UK, takes 6 weeks $275.32, which currently is about £185 compared to £72.50 by post or £81.25 check and send.
