Medical - Ileostomy

Hope someone can help? We are about to start the process of visa application but am a bit concerned regarding the medicals.

I have had an permanent Ileostomy for five years now due to ulcerative colitis, which is a full cure for the disease. I realise they are looking for people that do not burden the system (rightly so) but wonder how I'll fare? I'm fully fit and work full time (just don't sit on the loo anymore!!)

My bags and supplies are covered by a military exemption cert so should not be any kind of burden.

If anyone has any info on this subject I would be extremely grateful.

Tim.

Given that it cures the problem, I think you'll be fine. Have you thought of emailing the Australia High Commission at London.cc@dfat.gov.au ?

I had a couple of queries as I did the visa application myself and I found that they answered queries promptly and detail.

Hi Tim

Their only concern about you would be whether or not you would be eligible for Australia's Disability Pension because of your condition in the event that you were to decide to jack in your current job. However, if you are currently deemed to be fit enough to be in the armed forces, you would have a heckuva job to convince the MOC that you are too sick to work, chum!

The same doctors who provide the Medical Officer of the Commonwealth service to DIMA also provide a similar service for Centrelink, which is where people have to start if they want to try to claim Benefits of any kind.

If you are willing to pay £50 or so for a private, informal consultation there is no reason why you cannot make a special appointment to consult a Panel Doctor at this stage, just to get his opinion about whether he thinks the ileostomy would raise any doubts in the MOC's mind. I assume that the PD would have to tick Box B on Form 26, meaning that he has discovered "significant findings" or whatever it says. The Panel Doctors have no say in the decision-making - the MOC alone advises DIMA. However, I reckon that an experienced Panel Doctor would be able to make a pretty accurate prediction.

For what it is worth, it doesn't sound to me as if you are likely to have anything serious to worry about. The MOC would defo want to see the specialists' reports from the time and might ask you to arrange an up-to-date report before making a final decision on your meds, but they often do this solely as a precaution in case the Panel Doctor has failed to spot something important.

Cheers

Hi Gill,

Many thanks for all your advice, although I am no longer in the forces. Had to leave due to the above, but have now pursued a new career and work full time for the NHS.

I'll definitely bear in mind your advice when the time comes; I just hope they use common sense on these medicals.

Tim.

Hi Tim,

I may be able to help as i have an iileostomy since i was 17 years old and have had my medicals of which went fine, i have applied for a 457 visa as i have been sponsored by Nurseworldwide as a care officer/disability worker , i have done this job for about 9 years now. My immigration person who has lodged and helped me with my forms said she is 99% certain it will go through as i have put on the visa forms that my stoma medical goods will be self funded and at no cost to others which is what my immigration lady for Nurseworldwide told me to put as i will be funding it myself. It will cost me roughly £66 per month for all my stuff and i have contact details for the convatec place in Oz where they supply the goods where you can pay yourself. I really hope this helps and feel free to ask me anything at all, our visa is due any day now :D
