baggage hand luggage or other

sorry i think i might have posted this on the wrong topic title apologies for that tim
anyway
im a little worried about baggage and what you can take as hand luggage now as ive seen pictures on tv with people just having a small transparent plastic bag.
a bad experience the last time i went to oz 25 years ago and on the way back my camera and all the films were stolen from my case so i just want to be able to take cameras etc on as hand luggage, it wasnt so much the camera being stolen as much as the films that cant be replaced
the cameras i hold now are quite a bit hefty but too delicate to trust in the hold of the plane, is there a size and or weight limit and if its electronic is it not allowed on as hand luggage

You should be ok - there may still be size/weight limits on hand luggage, it will depend on the individual airline that you are travelling with.
The little plastic bags are for people travelling from UK airports (and I think possibly only BAA run ones?) who want to carry liquids. They have to be in a plastic bag and I think are supposed to be less than 100ml. Having said that, I have seen people buying 500ml drinks bottles which were then put in to a plastic bag at the checkout. It's insane!! But to answer the question, you should be able to take your camera.

Hi Jeff

Transsec (a unit within the Department for Transport) devised the current hand-luggage rules and simply imposed them on all UK airports and on the airlines using these airports. The fact that nobody in Transsec has ever run an airport or an airline is not seen as an obstacle....

Please see this link:

It seems that you will be OK to carry the cameras in your cabin baggage, but pack them near the top because they have to be removed from the bag and screened separately.

Apart from the size limit for the cabin bag (which is actually quite large) Singapore Airlines told us in October that the single item of cabin baggage must not weigh more than 7kg per passenger. That might be their own rule, though, because the DfT stuff doesn't seem to mention it.

Cheers

Gill
