Applying for Visa in oz
After speaking to a friend in Melbourne who travelled over 18 months ago he tells me he applied for and got his 457 on the Australian side. He didn't have to sit an English test and also only had a chest x-ray and no other medical. Are the rules different if you apply in Oz or UK? I'm unsure as to why I would have to sit an IELTS test when I'm English, so were my parents and there parents and so on, born and bred in England and lived here all 42 years?

No it is no different, 457 applicants generally do not have to sit IELTS and the medicals are more basic than for the permanent visa applicants.
