Sorry to hear that.
Yes, ask for the writing to be remarked - you missed it by just 0.5, so there's a chance it could go up. But book another test anyway just in case. Try to analyse what didn't go so well with the essays, come up with strategies to address them, and practise. I found information on the websites http://dcielts.com and http://ielts-simon.com pretty useful. If you do take the test again, it's probably worth doing a quick refresher on the other sections as well as you'll still need 8s on them.
Good luck!

Twistbexter - pleeeeease persuade him to do it again!!!
My hubby also failed in one section by 0.5 on his 1st exam. He was completely deflated after getting these results. He sat it again on the 12 May, received results yesterday & passed with even better scores than 1st attempt!! Your hubby will & can do it, I'm sure!!!!
I still feel this part of the emigration process seems the most pointless, but I guess it a great revenue making machine. Those of us who have to take it just to top up points, just have to grim & bear it. My hubby is in telecoms, he's never had to compose such
amazing essays or speak so well in English, in his life!
We also found out recently that you need a score of 7.5 to get into Cambridge?!? So there's an option I guess if Oz does not happen for us? Ha ha![]()
Definitely go for a remark. Writing is one of the subjective modules and a remark will often produce an additional .5 and that's all he needs.
