yes we plan to have about $25k to start us off from my savings
but i had heard you can get support for the 1st few months?
I would think $25k to be enough to see you through until you get a job?
There is a "Newly Arrived Resident's Waiting Period" of 2 years before you can claim most benefits. The following may be available to Permanent Residents (not those on temporary 457 visa) however:
Special Benefit. Newly Arrived Resident's Waiting Period does not apply "if you have suffered a substantial change in your circumstances beyond your control since becoming an Australian resident". But in any case anyone with more than $5,000 appears to be ineligible.
Disability Support Pension. There is a 10-year permanent residence requirement unless your inability to work or blindness happened while you were an Australian resident
Family Tax Benefit. The Newly Arrived Resident's Waiting Period does not apply.
Child Care Benefit. The Newly Arrived Resident's Waiting Period does not apply.

Pretty sure my cousin gets help with his rent , he's only been here 18 months.
You could be right - I've just looked up Rent Assistance on Centrelink's website and while it's not mentioned under "moved to Australia" the residence requirement is "To receive Rent Assistance you must also meet the residence requirements of your pension, allowance or benefit". The "pension's, allowance or benefits" that Rent Assistance is linked to include Disability Support Pension and Family Tax Benefit (and even some circumstance where you "are not eligible for Family Tax Benefit but meet other Family Tax Benefit requirements" whatever that means) so by a roundabout route it appears that new residents might also be eligible for Rent Assistance.

Rent assistance is like Housing Benenfit but it is means tested so if you have a bit of cash you wont get it
Rent Assistance is a Family Assistance payment. Those with PR are eligible for family assistance payments immediately on arrival but they are income based so in reality it will depend on how much your family income is as to how much you actually get.
