      My IELTS Results

      First post in PomsinOz,
This website has been quite helpful over the past couple of months. Thought i'd finally create an account and post on my recent good news. I took the IELTS general exam on February 9th,2012 at the ealing campus of Ealing,Hammersmith and West London College. I needed all 8's to get the 20 points for the Skilled 175 visa. i had a good feeling after i left the exam, but i did have some worries as i only did 1 weeks worth of preparation before i took it. It was the very first time i took this test and i aced it.

      Listening 8.5, Reading 8, Writing 8.5 and Speaking 9.

I am absolutely elated, as i dreaded the idea of having to shell out another 125 pounds for this exam. I know that me passing on the first try is an exceptional case, so i just wanted to tell those who are still trying, to hang in there. The feeling you get when when you see the scores you want, is beyond words.

      IT CAN BE DONE!!!

It's easy when you are a Native English Speaker, which is not my case, but is quite a remark achieving those marks on first attempt.

I do not think being a native english speaker, makes it automatically easier per se. I have read many posts on this forum of native english speakers struggling to get the scores the need. Taking the exam numerous times. Even highly educated people also struggle.I believe being a native english speaker, benefits you the most in the speaking section of the exam. The other sections come down to practice, especially the reading. I think this test comes down to each person's individual exam technique.

Well done, I'm due mine in 2 weeks time and a tad nervous to say the least. I need the points for my 175 visa application too and time is running out. I turn 45 in June and due to the length of time to process the application I reckon there isn't much room for failure.

I agree with you, but both modules namely writing and speaking are helped a lot if you practice, ear, speak and read English 24/7, owing not only to the big array of vocabulary you gathered throughout the years, and also the speaking module, where you do it ever since you were born.

Unfortunately, not everyone who sites on IELTS has these advantages, but you are right, there are some techniques to improve your overall score.

I can understand the pressures of working with a specific timeline and deadline. I was aiming to lodge my application before July 1st when the new rules come into place(Expressions of Interest stuff). That's why i started to do the IELTS exam from now, because i anticipated doing it at least 3 times, to get the required scores(because i thought this was the average amount of tries i though i would to get the required score). I guess i underestimated myself.
Another concern for me was the "having 12mths experience in your nominated field within the last 24 mths". I worked up to september 2011, before embarking on a 1 year MSc degree. As i am no longer working, i have up to september 2012 to lodge my application before this requirement expires on me.
Also whereas you may receive points based on years of experience, i for one, cannot claim any points for this as i only have 1 and half years overseas experience in total. I am 26year old. So my points are

      30 pts for Age
15 pts for Bachelors degree(Mechanical Engineering)
      20 pts for IELTS exam

To make the minimum 65 pts needed by the DIAC. Thanks to passing the IELTS, i now have everything i need to apply for the skilled 175 visa.
By the way, how long does the process actually take?
