I think you only get it if you have a PR visa not a provisional like the 475

Hi Rex,
I think the general rule of thumb is extra baggage allowances for permanent visa holders,
however, I have found some old posts on our sister site http://www.pomsinadelaide.com/forum/...nce-475-a.html where it it appears some people have been lucky.
I would email SA , as I always prefer to have first hand knowledge and if they do come up trumps, keep a copy of the email with you for check in purposes.

We got it as one way ticket holders (I'm Aussie citizen and hubby on spouse visa) and we just explained at the check in that we were emigrating. Nothing more than that, and they were happy to allow what we had. I think we had 120kg or just over between 5 fam members. say 126kgs if I remember right...

Hi
I contacted SA the other week and they confirmed that to get the extra allowance, 40kg, you need to hold a permanent residency visa and have that evidenced in your passport.
But there does seem to be exceptions to that rule from what people are saying.

I am not sure about SA but Emirates allow 30kg for all passengers. I have heard that they also allow extra if you are migrating, but I am not sure how that works

Hi Again,
Just to chip in, I also rang Emirates and they said to me that they dont do any extra baggage allowance regardless of the fact that we have a PR visa, their basic allowance is bigger, but obviously we will be going with SA. Again though, it seems that people have diferent responses from all the airlines. Best to just check yourselves and get them to confirm anything they agree in an email or letter :v_SPIN:

ANZ are offering new migrants a 50kg allowance with Emirates

Hi All,
We are flying with SA on the 27th of Aug on a 457 Visa and you are only given 20Kg of baggage...I called SA and they upped it to 25Kg as a good will gesture..I know its not much but its better than nothing.....just make sure they send you confirmation of this in a email in case you have any problems in Check in!
All the best!

Just be aware if you get a connecting domestic flight on another carrier once in Aus you may be stuck with that airlines weight limit not the excess given by the other airline.
