  1. I never thought that I would come on a forum like this and in a way have people tell me it's my fault, and that I think the world owes me a good job. I hope I would never do that do a person, who when reading with fresh eyes the following day just sounds upset and frustrated, but mainly upset. Thank you to those who wished me well, and thank you in a way to those who weren't, you have made my decision to leave this site so easy. I wish you all well for the future, and hope if there are others struggling to find a job, then I hope you find one soon.
  2. Yes 9-5, but also bars, cafes, and recently hotel night shift work. I came on here, hoping to find some support because I'm upset and struggling, not to be attacked about my attitude. I see you're in the UK, and I' guessing coming over here soon, I genuinely wish you well and hope you have more luck than I have.
  3. I've only been to Sydney this time. I spent 6 months travelling around Australia about 4/5 years ago, that was why when I came back this time on a working holiday visa I knew I wanted to spend an extended amount of time in Sydney! And I wasn't expecting it to be like the UK, that was the point, I was excited to try something new, around new people, and in a new country. I just may have been naive to think that I would be able to get a job other than minimum wage. But that's okay now, hearing the comments on this board tonight, I'll just move on. And I'll start again somewhere else, or maybe volunteer in SE Asia for a bit. But thank you for wishing me well.
  4. Well then it looks like my time in this country is up. And unfortunately, I don't even know whether I will ever even come back on holiday. It's definitely not the country my grandmother loved so much she took Australian citizenship!
  5. Please don't make assumptions about backpackers. I've been here 7 weeks and I've had one night out, and that night was to visit a friend who was just in Sydney for one day, and he bought me 2 glasses of wine, I didn't spend a penny except the bus there and back. And I would never work anything but hard, but I'm 28, not 18, I won't be treated like I have no rights and should work stupid hours for next to nothing. I truly find it unfathomable that there is no reciprocal agreement on how people are treated. 6months for 1 employer for minimum wage, or Australians who come to the uk on the same visa, who can work for 2 years with the same employer. And the UK has been going through a recession too, actually more so than here, and it would be beyond comprehension for an employer to state only EU citizens and residents need apply.
  6. Okay started something here. I have tried all cafes and bars in the immediate vicinity, am branching further out tomorrow. And take a look on SEEK, basically every other job says Australian citizens and residents need only apply. My plan wasn't to travel around the country, I did that about 4 years, this was just to spend a year In a city I loved, working and living and experiencing a different way of life! Well it certainly is different!
  7. Well racist or not, I just wish I'd known that whv holders are not treated the same as they are in the uk! I probably wouldn't have wasted my savings on what is basically now an extended 'holiday' in which I haven't seen the sights outside of Sydney, and I might have actually gone out for a drink every now and then rather than saving it!
  8. Hey, I've been here for almost 7 weeks, and I won't say I thought it was going to be easy, but I didn't for a second imagine that it was going to be this stupidly difficult to get a job! I was hoping to not do bar/cafe work as I've done that for the last 6 years at home. I signed up with 4 temping agencies (even though they only recommend 2 or 3), and so far all I've gotten is one 4hr shift that I spent as long travelling for. Every job I apply for either doesn't reply or says that because of my visa, they can't hire me, because they want someone for longer than 6 months! I've now gone round to all local bar/pubs, and all I've managed to get is 1 shift a week in a pub! Like I said, I didn't think a job would fall into my lap, but I also didn't think I would see such open discrimination. I'm 28, I decided to do this to try living in another country before I turned 30 whilst I could, I saved hard for 2 years, and now I'm seeing this money just disappear in first hostel fees and now rent, and it's just leaving me, thinking this is not worth it! As someone who worked in middle management, and hired people in the UK with working holiday visa's I just can't believe, that this is what it has come to. I've gotten to the point where I'm going to give it 2 weeks, and if I haven't found a job, then I'm leaving this country. And the country I loved, the last time I was here, I doubt I will ever come back to!
  9. I'm flying out tomorrow! Feeling both scared and excited! Can't believe it's finally here!
  10. I'll drop you a message when u get to Melbourne, and we can meet up.
  11. Sure, I need to get in and sort everything like TFN anyway, so I might not be able to start until August anyway. And I'm really interested in going to WA. Do you know what sort of work you're interested in? I've also been looking at volunteer opportunities in exchange for room/board.
  12. Hey, I'm arriving in Melbourne next Tuesday, and want to try and do my regional work straight away, would be great to meet up,!
