  1. Hi guys .. So I'm trying to migrate from Pakistan to Australia, under the Class 189 Visa .. I want to nominate the 'Software Engineer' (ANZSCO: 261313) Occupation, but I have a major issue: My education is technically in a different field. My Bachelors degree is called 'Computer Engineering' (From NUST, Pakistan) and my Masters Degree is called 'Electrical & Computer Engineering' (from Georgia Tech, Atlanta, USA). So now I'm a bit nervous that ACS may 'reject' me on the basis that my qualification doesn't match with my profession However, do note that in both Bachelors and Masters, I studied Software Engineering stuff primarily, and in Masters, I didn't have anything to do with the 'Electrical' part .. I studied only Computer Engineering stuff with Computer Science as a Minor .. So will I have a problem with ACS ?
  2. Hmm, okay ... So I guess I'll have to do both IELTS and Skills Assessment beforehand then .. Got some more questions .. 1) Can anyone tell me how the Skills Assessment works ? I mean, is there a test of some sort which I'd have to sit in ? To me it looks like I just have to submit certified photocopies of my degrees, transcripts, etc., and that will take care of it. Is this understanding correct ? 2) When does a person 'fail' a Skills Assessment ? Is there any criteria for 'passing' ? The reason I ask is because because education, I'm technically a Computer Engineer (i.e. I studied both Programming related stuff and hardware stuff in my Bachelors and Masters), but my professional field is Software Engineering .. So can they say that I should have done Bachelors and Masters in Software Engineering or Computer Science or something ? 3) If I 'fail' the Skills Assessment, can I be refunded the amount I paid for it (AUD$450 in my case) .. ?
  3. What f I try to find agents in my own country ? Won't that be better ? Also, apart from giving IELTS, is there anything else I need to prepare for in order to submit my EOI ? Also, can I submit my EOI beforehand and submit my IELTS score later on ?
  4. Can you guys tell me what is the IT sector like in Australia, generally speaking ? I mean is it thriving, or still relatively small compared to other sectors ? For example, I went to Dubai last year and noticed that although Finance related sectors are booming there, the IT industry is virtually non-existent; there's virtually no IT software development sector there at all .. So I'm wondering how Australia compares in this regard .. Also, is there any way to figure out the average salaries for IT people in Australia ? Haha .. Thanks for appreciating my English And so I guess my non-Australian degrees can get me points, right ? Just to confirm .. Does it have to be an Australian body or something ? Do they have any fees ?
  5. Not so far. Should I ? My impressions regarding agents is that they only take fees for things which you can do on your own .. At least this is the word of mouth around here .. But still, should I hire an agent or something ?
  6. Alright, I understand. So lets suppose I manage to get the 189 Skilled Migration Visa, and move to Australia .. What will be my chances of securing employment then in the IT Software Development sector, considering that I've recently moved to Australia but am legally allowed to work, and am a recent graduate but an up and coming professional .. ? Also, I'm looking at the requirements for the 189 Visa, and in the Points section I see this: I'm somewhat not sure if my non-Australian Bachelors degree (from Pakistan) and non-Australian Masters degree (from Georgia Tech, USA) can count towards the "Educational qualification" section, because it says "from an Australian educational institution" .... I'm 95% sure that it does count because of the latter part in that sentence, but I just want to confirm this .. Also, the top part says that 0 points are awarded for an IELTS 6 score, 10 points are awarded for an IELTS 7 score, 20 points are awarded for an IELTS 8 score ... A friend of mine who migrated to Australia about 6-7 years ago told me that getting an 8 is very hard ! .. Is that true ? I'm fairly confident in my English, as I've spent about 7 years of my childhood life in UK and US, and so can speak good English very fluently .. In fact, I can read/write/speak English much better than my native tongue (Urdu) ... I also got 111/120 in TOEFL about 4-5 years ago .. So should I be worried ?
  7. Hmm .. Did you mean I can't get sponsorship while not being in Australia, or did you mean I can't migrate or something ? (I'm not sure if the two are related or not) .. Also, don't the Skilled Migration Visas require you to have a job offer in hand ? Or can people without a job offer also apply for it and get selected ? And also whats the reason behind you saying that I have very little chance ? Is it the way employment is structured in Australia (e.g. don't hire people unless they are present in Australia), or is my background lacking something maybe ?
  8. Hi everybody ... I'm new to this forum, and I'm basically looking for advice .. I'm from Pakistan and am trying to assess the best course of action for migrating to Australia .. I'm basically a Software Engineer, and I did my Bachelors from a renowned university in Pakistan (NUST) .. After that I got one year of work experience in the Telecom industry (Motorola), after which I got selected for Fulbright Scholarship and went to the US for my Masters .. I did my Masters from Georgia Tech in the US, in Computer Engineering, and then came back to Pakistan and have been working here as a Senior Software Engineer for the past 2 years or so .. I'm currently trying to figure the best way to move to Australia for work, as the kind of Software Development I'm interested in is very limited in Pakistan .. So what are the main hurdles that I'd have to cross ? And how likely is it to get a decent job in Australia while being in your home country ? How likely are companies to sponsor outsiders in Australia ? Is there any hope at all ? :frown: As you can tell, I'm basically looking for advice here ..
