  1. Myself and my husband have only been here a month but I'm happy to take part of at all helpful. Becky
  2. We've just had the exact same experience. We got to Canberra on 4th August and planned to stay with my sister and family for 4 months before looking for a rental. However, we felt so settled right away and I have secured a job so we decided last week to start looking. We saw a house we liked, swung by to do a recce, loved it. We went to the open viewing on Saturday morning, loved it more. Applied Monday at the estate agents directly with all documentation and ID required. Got accepted today (Wednesday) and are on our way to sign the lease papers and put down 4 weeks bond and 2 weeks rent upfront. So easy!
  3. Holy Crap! £50,000 was our combined uk income (pre tax) We came over with $27000 and it is more than enough for our needs (granted we are staying with family short term) we are trying to use as little of our cash as possible so we can have a house deposit within the next couple of years. You'll be fine.
  4. Does anyone know if its possible to watch the UK world cup warm ups in Australia? We missed the Ireland v Wales game yesterday and really dont want to miss the next game. I'm told we shouldnt stream anything here as its illegal, not that i have ever succesfully streamed anything here anyway. Any advice gratefully received, cheers.
  5. I haven't done a critical care course as yet but plan to do one here. I don't know how it works in Perth (different states have different classifications of nurses) Here in Canberra, there are level 1 Nurses (equivalent of A4C band 5) and level 2 Nurses (equivalent of A4C band 6. For a level 1 position you don't need the course but to advance as level 2 you do. The whole process is very stressful, or it may just be that I found it stressful as I had many additional stressors leading up to leaving the UK. Desperately trying to get our house renovated ready for rental ( doing all the work ourselves, me as project manager). During that time my mother in law became critically ill and got admitted to my Old ITU (so had to try to fit In hospital visits etc) , then she passed away 4 days before we flew. It was hell. It's all done and dusted now though, and we hopefully have tenants moving in to our UK hours next week. Fingers crossed it's all finally coming together.
  6. what visa are you planning on applying for? If it's a visa 189, you'll need to pass IELTS and do a skills assessment first. Then I would suggest applying for your visa then apply for registration with AHPRA. From them receiving my application to my getting registration took 4 months. Hope this helps.
  7. Sadly yes. And pay about £150 for the pleasure. I know it's ridiculous, but you just have to suck it up and do it. There will be many more hoops for you to jump through too, but it'll all be worth it in the end.
  8. Thanks for reviving this thread! An update on my progress is that we arrived in Canberra on August 4th. On the 7th I had an interview at Canberra hospital for a registered Nurse job in ITU and thankfully I got the job! We are staying with my sister and her gorgeous family and are finally starting to settle down. We were very homesick initially. Having only really thought about the guilt of leaving my parents behind, it was quite a shock when I actually started to think about how I felt and just how much I miss them each and every day. It was never going to be easy. We had a tough time at the end. Desperately trying to finish our house ready for rental. The. My Mother in law became critically ill and was admitted to the ITU I had just left as a nurse. Sadly she passed away on the Wednesday, and we flew out on the Sunday missing her funeral. I don't know how we held it together, far too much stress to handle all at once. Things are getting easier now. We bought a second hand car to give us some independence. Once I start work and have an idea of what income I can expect each month we will start to look for rental houses. Anyway that's it from me for now. Will probably write a bit more in future. I hope everyone's plans at going swimmingly! Best of luck to you all!
  9. I'll do my best lol! Yes I meant the scores for each module but it has to come directly from The university of training. And that should cover the whole pharmacokinetics etc, as I didn't have to send anything extra for that. If your solicitor is a notary public that's fine, as long as he signs the copies as a notary not just solicitor and he has to use the exact wording specified. I'd be surprised if you didn't have to pay a fee for this. The job I have got is an ITU nurse, but my dream job in the future is to work on the helicopters for retrievals and rural emergencies etc. x
  10. You're welcome Loulou. Yes I applied before my visa was granted, it's not a problem. When you get your eligibility to register email it will ask you to present yourself to an AHPRA office once you are in the country to confirm your ID. You're visa, once granted, will be electronically attached to your passport and AHPRA can access it that way and print it off themselves. I agree their emails are not helpful, but the people o dealt with at the AHPRA office were excellent. I had arranged an interview for my perfect job at canberra hospital for two days after I arrived and got the job! Was super chuffed, and it was a massive weight off my mind. I am just awaiting my police check (yes, another one!!) the two I have already had for visa and then AHPRA aren't good enough lol! I'm hoping to start at the beginning of September. I am desperate to get back to work, getting very twitchy about not having a routine. Best of luck to you and if I can help in anyway get in touch, I'll do my best. Xx
  11. I feel your pain. That should be totally doable, I sent mine in end of April, was received May 1st. I got my registration week before last. And got the 'eligible to register' email a couple of weeks before that. I was in the country by then so couldn't have timed it better if I'd tried. I found AHPRA to be the hardest thing to do out of everything including visa 189 application. With regards to certifying docs, a doctor or policeman won't do unless you're in Australia. It has to be a notary public or a justice of the peace (I paid £150 to get all mine certified). A solicitor won't do, it can only be an NP or JP. Frustrating I know, but eventually the hoops that you have to jump through do disappear and you soon forget them. Best of luck! Oh and make sure you get an academic transcript of education, which specifically states the scores you achieved. Not just a generic breakdown of modules the degree covered. that's what held my application up.
  12. Unfortunately you do have to do another check through fit2work. The changes can in in February this year. Total con and just a money making scheme. I've had hell with AHPRA but if it makes you feel any better when you get here they are a lot better. That's my experience anyway.
  13. I too am interested in this exact topic. Ours and my parents future plans are that my parents will come and stay with us for six months then spend the other six months in the UK on their canal boat. I read about a visa that allows visits of up to 12 months every 18months. Assuming that you have to have 18 months in between visits this would be problematic. Anyone know if there is a way my mum and dad can follow the sun all year round?
  14. Ditch the dvd's and use YouTube on fire.
  15. Funny you should say that, I managed to get a break today by going to have injections to numb my entire face (and even my ears) and then have a couple of teeth drilled. Trying to find out which glue would be best for gluing down carpet gripper strips with a totally numb face, was interesting to say the least. I'm pretty sure the guy thought there was something very wrong with me. (And I might have spat on him by accident) All in all, I'm ok thanks tiffanysamantha85. We fly to Canberra to stay with my sister for 4 months on the 2nd August and are about a week behind schedule on the house. (Well a month behind the original schedule, the one where hubby took voluntary redundancy and was going to spend his free 2 months doing the house up) instead he has become an expert on a racing car game he has on his iPad. So now the work really has to be done he is stressing and taking it all out on yours truly and my lovely parents who are so kindly putting us up. He shouts at me if I splash a bit if paint in the wrong place, but when he screwed through our newly tiled bathroom floor into an upstairs mains water pipe right above our newly plastered and painted living room, God forbid I should comment. Fun and games. It's a good job I love him isn't it?!
