I agree with you Freckleface.
We have lived in the Illawarra area for 43 years now, the first 5 years at Warilla, then we bought a house at Albion Park where we still live, the farmers field is just across the road from us, so it's really like living in the English countryside, we are 10 minutes from Shellharbour Beach, 15 mins from Kiama, and 20 minutes from the Gong, not to mention about 90 mins to the centre of Sydney by car these days, it used to take an hour, but I drive to Sutherland and catch a train into the city if we go there nowadays.
My wife used to drive to work at Caringbah and drive there and back everyday for 20 years, so living anywhere in the Illawarra, and working in the Gong is the norm for most people here, the beaches are some, if not the best in Oz, Port Kembla beach got the award for the best and cleanest beach in oz for the second time this year.
Wollongong city centre is like a large building site at the moment with the new shopping centre and Mall under construction, I only go to Wollongong Harbour to have lunch etc, and let the dog have a swim near the boat haulout ramp.
I find that there are more places to see in and around the Illawarra than any other part of Oz, that has been verified by visitors that have come to this region after going around oz in motorhomes, the biggest problem at the moment is work and housing, but that is not a problem for me, and I honestly wouldn't live anywhere else.
