    Could I just add, ensure that the agent you consult is a member of MARA (such as Alan Collett who regularly posts here). There are some unscrupulous people who call themselves agents especially offshore who will promise you the world and do nothing but take your money.

    Thanks Alan, my daughter said the account matures November 2021 (5 years after it was lodged) so maybe it automatically renews for another five years (or she made a mistake of course).

    Query re the Assurance of Support. When was the term was increased from 5 to 10 years, was it made retrospective to include people who had already lodged their 143 applications? TIA

    They could use Transferwise to send the money to you which is probably the cheapest method for an international transfer, so you can then use BPay.

    You'll have quite a wait yet, but in the meantime your agent should be able to give you a rough timeline - you are paying him so don't be afraid to ask questions! If you look at previous posters signatures and can find somebody with similar acknowledgment dates etc. that will give you an idea.

    Even though not strictly related and going a bit off topic, it's very useful information, and if such had been posted before I arrived here would have made my life much simpler. I'll add - don't forget Ambulance Cover insurance - in most states use of an ambulance can attract a big bill.

    Do also bear in mind that even being eligible for Medicare, any medications have to be paid for, some are very low cost, others are discounted to $40 (currently), so if your parents both require regular medication they could face quite a hefty bill each month. Opticians/dentists/hearing aids too which are not generally covered by Medicare can be expensive - I'm speaking of Victoria so it might be different in other States.

    I really do think you need help from an Agent if you are having so much difficulty right at the start of your visa journey. The price of instructing a good agent (like Alan) is a very, very small price to pay when you consider the cost of the application. Do bear in mind that the forms have to be submitted in the English language and if English is not your first language you could find this causing you great difficulty.

    I'm not disagreeing with you, just that it appears new visa holders are able to enter Australia in spite of the present restrictions on travel, with no requirement that their journey is for the purpose of taking up permanent residence at this time (rather than making a validation trip) because they are classed as "residents". I am referring to an earlier post by Jellybean.
