  1. Thank you Sammy and Ali - I'll point her in the direction of applying but from what you say it's not looking too hopeful.
  2. Thanks Parley, I didn't realise his income would be a factor - assumed as a student she would automatically be entitled to studenty things.
  3. Hello everyone, wasnt sure whether to post this in finance but happy to move if it's not appropriate here. my daughter studies part time at college for a diploma and is looking for work too. Because it's part time study she doesn't appear to qualify for any financial assistance - the centrelink youth allowance is for full time study Or work seekers, and she doesn't get a student opal card or prescription concessions. Has anyone else had this experience with college students and does anyone know if there is any assistance she can claim whether through centrelink or any other organisation? I've scoured the internet but not getting much back. thanks!
  4. Hello all, i know this was a while ago but as a newbie myself it was comforting to read through and know everyone has the same bouts of loneliness. I'm in the Mosman/cremorne area (still Airbnb-Ing but know it's the area I want to find a permanent place) and also not in my twenties! Everyone I've met is friendly but they also have their own friend circles and I guess it takes time to build up new ones for yourself. If anyone on the lower north shore would still like to have coffee and share experiences I'd love to hear thanks
  5. Haha, thank you LKC, RavenBlue, BobHatton and Bulya - it's good to hear from you all with views and advice. The one day at a time advice is good as is the comfort in giving it 2 (or 3) years - don't act on knee jerk reactions and realise I will go through ups and downs of doubts. I'm doing this on my own and sometimes dealing with all the business side of things gets me down and the comfort of 'home' is appealing but I'll throw myself out there - join groups and I'm sure look back in a years time with no regrets!
  6. Thank you again, I'll get on to Medicare first then wait a bit for the drivers licence - it's more important to get a permanent address for that one. I'll find it easier once I get one other piece of Id so will pursue Medicare as the next option. As as an aside RavenBlue, I notice you're in early days over here, how are you finding it?
  7. Haha, thank you both for your replies. The easy bit is I have an Aussie passport the tricky bit is don't have a permanent address as in a holiday let at the moment so don't have any Id with an address on. It's that vicious circle, can't get rental without a job, can't get Medicare (or any form of permanent Id) without an address, can't register with job agencies without the id. Would you suggest Medicare first or will they also need something with an address on. I can give friends addresses if it's just a case of somewhere to mail to but I can't prove where I live.
  8. Hello all, just arrived (1 week in!) and trying to get as much sorted before I start work. Next weeks priorities are Medicare and a driving licence. How easy is it to transfer my uk licence? I've looked up the rms website and it appears I rock up with id and don't need to take a test etc - is that correct? I'll be going to the wynyard office but don't have access to a printer so hoping to do any form filling on the spot without having to do a repeat visit. Any experiences? thanks
  9. Hello everyone, I'm an expat Aussie moving back to Sydney after 20 years. I know the area I want to rent when I get there in March but do most people take an Airbnb/holiday let to start and look once there and put their shipping into storage? Do real estate agents rent to overseas folk before we get there? I haven't a confirmed job yet so is that a factor for agents too? If I have no hope of securing a place before I leave here I won't waste time looking at domain and use the time to do jobs I've been putting off, like packing ? what is the 'usual' process of moving? Thanks
  10. Hi I'll be returning to Sydney after 16 years in uk. Primary school teaching assistants didn't really exist as a job when I left oz but it's what I've been doing in England and wondered if the role has progressed now over there? Does anyone have any experience and know of any job agencies in Sydney? I've searched the smh jobs pages but only seem to find TA jobs for secondary schools. thanks
  11. Hiya, looking for opinions. My daughter (16) and I hold uk and aus passports and currently live in uk. Whenever we've travelled back I've carried four passports and shown appropriate ones for each country. My daughter's next trip however is on her own and I'm unsure what to do. Choices seem to be to give her both but I don't want her worrying which to present when or risk losing both, or travel on aus but run risk of worrying questions at immigration when returning to uk. I'm trying to make the whole process as easy as possible for her but keep returning to having to load her with both. Tbh, I'm nervous enough about her travelling alone as it is
  12. Not sue when you're off Cheswick but hope everything goes well, sun is shining here in SW and counting down to the Tour and Carnival. Funny to think you'll be a face in the crowd when I'm thinking of doing the opposite to you after 15 years back here I miss Oz! Enjoy your first drink at the Old English Gentleman :-)
  13. Hi Cheswick. Good luck with the move. I'm in saffron walden and going back to Oz in a couple of years! When do you arrive?
