  1. Hi Andy thank you for your response. I cannot see the message in the private message folder.
  2. Hi My mortgage deal in the UK ran out 3 months ago. Back up to SVR. We are renting it out and thought it would be straightforward to move to a buy to let. But our IFA in UK is having trouble sorting it out. One issue seems to be that we'll be away more than a year. We we seem pigeon holes as an expat investor rather than someone who lived in the property and is letting it out while working on a 457. We may switch to PR at some point but haven't got immediate plans to do that. With current exchange rate, I'm having to send $400 a month to cover the gap between rent and mortgage. Please can you help. Annmarie
  3. Hi everyone My husband just accepted a job in Melbourne to start in January in sponsored 457 position. So, first job will be applying for the visa. But, as it's looking like we'll probably be flying at Christmas (in between finishing our jobs on 19 December and starting new ones 5 and 12 January - prob opting to fly on 24 or 25 December), what would your advice be on when to book flights out and our short-term rental (e.g. as soon as we've signed job contracts or not until we get our visas). Another questions is people's experiences of how quickly you secure a long-term rental after arriving. Our plan was to organise a short-term rental for 6-8 weeks. In your experiences, is that enough time to secure a long-term rental? Also on a "things to take" point: - what should we buy that definitely more expensive to get in Oz? (e.g. I've heard bedding and white goods) - should you bother taking large electricals (e.g. our widescreen TV, a fridge freezer) or will they not work properly because of differences in voltage? Thanks everyone for your advice. Annmarie
  4. We're hoping to move at Christmas, if not in the early part of 2015. We don't have kids, so hoping to make friends through work, local community and joining running club etc..
  5. Hi there My husband and I are working towards a move to Melbourne this winter. He's a physio and to complete his registration with AHPRA, he needed to have his documents for the registration form signed by a notary (previously, for other parts of the process, a solicitor's signature on other documents was fine). The form stipulated either notary public or justice of the peace. We had considered chancing it with a solicitor, but if gets knocked back, it could cost us another 6 weeks and we didn't want to risk it. Today, our local notary signed and stamped all of his documents today for £84 - with a proper posh stamp and everything. You can find a notary at http://www.thenotariessociety.org.uk/find-a-notary
  6. We were wondering the same thing too - especially as house prices haven't climbed recently.
  7. Hi New PomsinOz-er. Today I filled 3 bags with clothes to either throw/recycle or send to charity shop. And had confirmation of quote for our 2 cats and 1 dog to relocate! They can fly as of 14 July.
  8. This thread has been really useful. We are planning on landing in Oz - jobs permitting - August/September 2014. Where is the best place to look for short-term lets? We will have 2 cats and a dog with us. Thanks for the advice xx
  9. Hi there Good luck with your move. My husband and I are looking to move out there later this year - also with 2 cats and a dog. Do let us know how you get on. We were wondering whether you'd rent a home before or secure a short-term let, then rent somewhere long-term. I've never rented since uni! Take care Annmarie
  10. Hi there I'm new to the site and we're looking at move to the Melbourne or Sydney areas in late summer. Do people advise securing a long-term property to rent before you land? Or is it more usual/sensible to find a short-term let and then look around in your early days - before all the stuff arrives from UK - to find your proper home? Thanks for any advice. Annmarie
