  1. Hi Julie i would like to give you my experience of coming to australia. Although we live in sydney but hope it will help. I know how you are feeling as it is a very scary move My Husband who is 72YRS AND i 66YRS. We moved out here 3 1/2 years ago and i can honestly say this has been the best move we have ever made. I am a nurse and i got a parttime job almost right away. My husband has also a parttime job in woolworths We look after our grandchildren 3 days a week. See our two daughters all the time. We have bought a onebedroom unit in a good area You will get a seniors card as soon as you get here which lets you travel by bus train or ferryfor $2.50 a day. We do not find it too expensive as we live within our means. There is so much to do here which is free. We feel this is our home and we have settled in no bother. We love love love it here, and hope you do too.
  2. Hi Karen we did not use an agency, and in your situation which is the same as mine (i have two daughters living here in oz) You most probably could do it your self. It is a lot of forms and stuff but even if you have an agent you have got to give them all your information So you could save yourself a fair bit of money by filling in your own forms. We are now living in Sydney and loving every minute. Good luck Karen .
  3. Hi Deejee there are no silly questioned on here. Everthing I did to get here i learned from PIO. I would have been lost without it. The $5.90 is for each item. But here that is a massive saving. Good luck and I am happy to answer any questions I can. Phyllis.
  4. Hi Deejee. yes we were in a similar situation as yourself. we have been living in Sydney for over two years now. I can honestly say it is the best move we have ever made. We both have a uk state pension and i have a small NHS work pension. I am 64 and my hubby is 70. He has a Partime job packing shelfs in woolworths its only a couple of hours a week I work two days a week. We have bought a furnished one bedded unit For $300,000. In Crows nest which is a very good area. We have a bulkbilled doctor and it goes straight to medicare, so we dont pay anything. Medication after 2 years for a script (if you are 65 or over) is $5.90. Before that we used generic medication. We have a great life we are carefull with our money. We dont have a car, as the transport system is great, we can travel all day by rail bus or ferry for $2.50 a day. You will get a seniors card shortly after you arrive, we use this for our travelling we get coffee cheaper ect. We have also had some very cheap holidays curtesy of scoopon voucher. so living in Australia can be as expensive as you want to make it. There are loads of things you can do that is free, you have the sunshine, and i have my gorgeous 4 grandchildren that i see almost every day. Our quality of life and our health is so much better here. Deejee we also started with the 103 visa and then changed to cpv. Best of luck in your decision, i know it is very hard, I even had 1 of my daughters telling me how we would never manage in oz, and all the other scare stories. All i can say is it has worked for us, and we are living the dream with our children and grandchildren. Best wishes Phyllis
  5. Hi there Know how you feel I have been there please believe me when I say this is the best move you will ever make. The big outlay of money we had to pay is forgotten now. and we did not have a great deal of money. we sold our council house in the uk. I am 63 my hubbie 68, and we have never been happier. We do childcarefor our daughters mon tues wed, and i work thurs frid. we have bought our unit (flat) which we never thought we could. Australia can be expensive, but only if you want it to be. We manage fine and live within our means. We go to a doctor that is bulked billed ( that means they send it straight to medicare and we dont have any outlay. We do pay for our medicines and you can also get these cheaper if you shop around, and once we are here for two years then my husband will get his for very little. all in all it is a decision we have never regretted. Once you pay 2nd big money you are almost here. You will be a permanent resident the second you get of the plane. I want to wish you all the best, and hope like us all your dreams will come true. Keep positive this is a golden opportunity. Phyllis x
  6. Hi we are Crows Nest lower north shore, would love to meet up with other PIO s We came out in the 143 visa, and have been living here since last March. It would be good to compare notes. Phyllis and Benny
  7. Hi I Know How you feel, as I felt exactly the same way. We are now in sydney and it has been the best decision we have ever made. we thought we would be better off in the uk, but wanted to be with our family. We have less money than you and we are managing very well. we are renting at the moment. It is a one bedroom flat, fully furnished, has a swimming pool and is close to both our daughters we are paying $380 per week this is considered a good area. Our plan is to buy a house with a granny flat with one of our daughters, they can easily pay the mortgage but do not have the savings for the deposit. This is where we come in, we will have our own space. We are not working but our daughters pay us for child care. We also get paid to babysit their friend children. we are also Mystery Shoppers which gives us extra money. We love being with our girls and our grandchildren, and we are having the time of our life. Love love Sydney. Please believe me you are making the right decision. Nothing is more important than being with our kids. Good luck and follow your dream.x
  8. Hi Marian, We are in a similar situation to yourselfs, we have our visa and have been living in Sydney for 7 weeks now. We love it, and like yourselfs we have to work. We are lucky in that our two daughters pay us for childcare, not much but it all helps. we also do babysitting, which we really enjoy. we are renting a one bedroom furnished appartment, and we could not be happier. Long term we are hoping to buy along with one of our daughter a house with a granny flat. This would suit both of us, as her and her husband cannot afford a deposit. If we can pay a fairly big deposit they will pay the morgage. With all the problems getting the visa and paying the 2nd Vac I can honestly say it has all been worth it. We are kept busy, and also it is keeping us fit, we are loving every minute of our new life. Best wishes to all, it will be worth it. Phyllis
  9. Hi just a quick update. We have been in Sydney for two a bit weeks now. We are staying with our daughter, but move into our apartment on 5th april. We are renting the apartment ,it is in crows nest (considered a good area) close to city. The apartment is a one bedroom fully furnished. it has a swimming pool, jacuzi. It is $380.00 per week. We have got our medicare cards and are waiting for our seniors card. We travel every where bus train and ferry with a $2.50 per day pensioners excursion card. we are loving it here. It has all been worth it. Our grandkids are amazing. We do not have a true idea of cost of living until we move into our own apartment. I will give you an update on Sydney life, as we find out more. We do know that this has been the best decision we have ever made. The cost of the visa almost forgotten!!!!!. We have spoke to lots of people here who are on temp visa, and have told us about the stress of it all. It is nice to be permanent residents. Good luck everyone. x x xx x
  10. A big Hi to every one. I have just worked my last shift, and my husband finishes his work tonight. We have sold our house, sent our boxes away, had our visa stamp is in our passport, we have transferred almost all our money, and we fly ouy with emirates on the 10th march.. I can hardly believe it, and it would not have been possible without the help we have recieved from this wonderful forum and other similar forums. A couple of years ago we knew nothing about emigration, and we were helped every step of the way with people on this forum. best wishes to all parent who like me want to be with our children and grandchildren. Do not let doubt get in your way. I have come the full circle. I started with the 103 visa, and then we realised just what we would be missing in OZ, and also our age. next we thought we would have 6 months here and 6 months in Oz. we realised that the cost off all the fights, renting out houses etc. we were trying everything to avoid paying that big money. But we have paid it now and we are 100%sure we have done the right thing. Yes we would have had more money here, but you cannot put a price on time with your children. Thankyou every one has helped me, thanks to you we were able to do this without an agent. BEST WISHES TO ALL YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING. Phyllis and Benny x
  11. Hi Cathy Sorry I cannot help you,but I would really love the answers, as like you we were hoping to leave money. Lets hope someone can help. Good Luck.
  12. Hi Mike, I think we are quite near you. Our Daughters live in Crows Nest. Yes I do know what you mean, close but not too close. When are you moving permantely to Sydney. Phyllis
  13. Hi my hubby and I migrate to Sydney 10th March 2011. I am 62 my husband is 68, we are both still working and we will retire end of feb. I was due my state pension 2009 and I have defered it, and we will continue to defer to at least the end of April. We then will get the 4% rise. As long as you can defer, your pension will rise the same as if you were in the UK. It gets frozen as soon as you start claiming it. Phyllis
